What seems most, to be lamented is that the merely casual observer does not always look faa-enough to see how apparently trivial scientilrc discoveries may possibly benefit the community, if only properly, applied. The circun stance that persons drinkiug of a certain. stream were cured of fever led to the discovery of the virtues of Jesuits' bark and subsequently of quinine, since it was found out that large, quantities of cinchona leaves, branches, and twigs had fallen into and imipregnated the-waters. Another notable instance is afforded by the history of the now well-known Insecticide prepared by Mr. Kruse. A traveller through Eastern Europe noticed that there was an almnat utter absence.of insect life in certain dis triets, as also that a peculiar kind of dowering shrub was found there...

DI)PUTATION. A deputation representing the Mumi. cipal Association of Victoria was ins troduced to the Commissioner of Publio Works by Mr. Cameroa, M. LA., on Friday, t6th inst, who stated that he had spoken to the Trerasere with reference to the endbwment. Mr. Service promised to provide for itas at present, pending the passing of the Local Government Bill, which would be introduced next session. The deputation then brought seveesl matters before the Conmisoser, amongst them the necessity of omtinm ing the endowment at £310,000, and nakling prevision for the abolition of tolls. The closed roads question was also argued, as a large amount of revenue would be derived from, if the suggestion of the Association is ausoptet, via., leasng all roaits i5lt were not required for publio use. KANGAROO GROUND CHURCH. The hoard of management of the above church met at 5.30 p.m, on Saturday last, 7th April. Present: Rev. A. Mackie (who presided, and coastituted the meeting with prayer), Masrs . Bell, Johnston, Charlton, Cameron, and J. Bell, jun. (secretary.) The minutes of the previous meeting held on February 24th, were read and confirmed. The anniversary blanee-sheet was submitted, showing receipts from all sources to amount to £29 12s 6d, and expenses, £7 19s dd. leaving a balance to the credit of the building fund of £21 13e. : . Milbla Nott was psced on her trial. at the Araldale Asuses yesterday, be fore Mr. Justice Innes and a jury of twelve,' for the murder of Robt. Bnre Mitchell, by stabbing, at Stannifer, in October lat. The prisoner, who is an orphan girl, 18 years of age, and very good looking, was enpged to be mar-... vied to Mitchell, but in consequence of his refusal to carry out his promise after all the arrangements had been mado, she stabbed him. The jury re tired a four o'clock and at eight.. o'clock they returned a verdict of wil ful murder, with a stroeg nvoomenda' tion to mercy. A piatual scene took place when the verdict was given. The individual in qaestion, who is now rn his th year, is a German by birth, and so early in life as It was remarkable for the hairy development on his chin.
