COLONIAL WINES. SIB,-In perusing the columns of your con- temporary to-day, my attention was drawn lo an article upon " Colonial Wines," shewing tho quantities grown in the difforont vine- yards, and alluding to their appreciation by the Victorian public. Now, there can be no doubt thal colonial wine is,par excellence, the bevcrago host suited to the Australian climate, but the prosont high price mili- tates against its use, especially in Queens- land, whore a duty of four shillings a dozen is n'dded-the samo as upon a foreign pro- duction. It has struck mc that in om day of progress, and in a land where liberal ideas seem to be entertained and acted upon, as in our Queens- land (which has set an oxamplo worthy ot imitation in grappling with tho land ques- tion), that it would bo another move in the right direction to do away with the imposts upon colonial tobacco as well as colonial wines. This policy would tond to draw closer tho ties of connection with our sister colonies, which ...

The Couirer. SATURDAY. JUNE 8, 1861. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 8 June 1861

Wfft (Stornier* SATURDAY. JUNE 8, 1861. 1 WIIEN we said, in a former issue, speak- ing of lue Duke of NEWCASTLE and his locum tenens, Sir Cr. 0. Lcwis, that there was " a wide difference in the calibre of these two great guns," we did not expect J,bat the truth of the remark would be so soon and so Blrikingly illustrated as it is by the despatch addressed by the Duke to Sir GEORGE BOWEN on the sub- ject of the Supreme Court Bill. Both the Duke and Sir Q. C. LEWIS have reached the high position of Secretary of State to her Majesty ; but at their first start in political life no one would have ventured to prophesy that either of them would have attained that dignity. Very different reasons, however, would soon have been assigned in either case for the reluctance to be tempted into such a prediction. Sir Q. C. LEWIS gave early promise of eminence as a scholar, and that promise has been amply redeemed since Ho is confessedly one of the first classical scholars of the day, and the valuabl...
