MR. MORTON IN NOWRA. A MOST S0COESSFDL MEETING. — THOSE LETTBBS OF CANDIDATE MACLKAN'a. — A CHALLENGE, BUT NO AC CRPTANC\E. — A MANLY, OPEN ADDRES8 AND A VOTE OF CON FIDENCE. : At precisely 8 o'clock on Thursday night Alderman C. Graham was voted to the chair at Mr. Morton's meeting in the skating rink. We are perfectly safe in saying that a larger or more en thusiastic political meeting was never hold in Shoalhaven. Alderman Graham, in a few well cliosen words, expressed his surprise at being voted to the chair, but being there he must say that in his opinion it was the duty of every respectable citizen to listen attentively, at this po litical crisis, to the opinions of the various candidates so that they might return a man who would honestly and conscientiously further the_ interests both of the citizens he represented and the sountry from which he drew his support. This, as they all knew, had most satisfactorily been done hy Mr. Morton, and in consequence it gave him (Aid. Graha...

Is it right or proper that a' candidate for our suffrages, who advertises himself to gire an electoral .'address at a certain time and place, ^ohoulil be allowed to detain a body of ifceotors for 40 minutes out of a speech lasting less than 70 minutes, to listen to personal abuse of the character and actions of his polttipal opponent. MR. M'LEAN AT TERARA. . About 20. people were assembled in tho billiard room of Mr. D. Hyam's hotel to hear Mr. Maclean's speech on Tuesday night. The chair was taken by Mr. W. M'Gce who said that this honor was unexpected, but that all he had to say was that he hoped the audience would give Mr. Maclean a fair hearing. It was noticeable that tho greater part of the persons assembled were boys considerably under ago. Mr. Maclean began his address by dis cussing at great length on tho ways and customs of bygone times aB being very much inferior to our own present customs. He spoke of tho sacrcdness of the vote by ballot, bogging the electors to take no notice of claptrap but vote according to their conscience. Mr. Maclean said he would describe his views nt length on Wednesday, and so would merely give an outline on this occasion. (Several sup porters of Mr. Morton were present, and ! C'est Finis. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 20 June 1891

Cost Pius It is over, the victory is complete, and all that remains to be done isto pick up the pieces and bury the dead. Even victory, glorious as it is, lias its dark side. The victorious hero has, we may be sure, one or two anxious thoughts passing through that brow bedecked with laurels. It is the nature of a generous man. to feel a pang of compassion, for the opponent he defeats, whatever sort of an enemy he may bo ; and he shows this by his courteous demeaitour towards this opponent when victory is an accom plished fact. We have an admirable instance of this in the result of our Shoalhaven election. For the tinio being all the harsh things said, all the insinuations made, all the cunning stratagems used are forgotten, obliter ated. He is defeated, it is enough. 3Ve Britishers do not strike a man when he is down. VVheu we look at the matter from an impartial and un prejudiced standpoint we come to the conclusion, having taken all details into consideration, that the result is o...
