Federation. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 8 January 1898

Federation. The third session of the Federal Convention will meet in Melbourne on the 21st January. It is to be hoped that it will produce more practical results than hitherto. The financial Lion in the Path will cer tainly have to be siain before any practical steps can be taken, and from the evidence already before us it seems unlikely that the Conven tion can dispose or it. untortunate ly there do not seem to be three men in all the Convention who have any workable scheme which they can put before their fellow members ; and those few who have solid ideas, and the courage to uphold them, meet with little or no support. Provincial jealousies, and local in fluences so warp the judgment of the majority that they are wholly in capable of treating this question from a national point of view. Cer tainly no scheme will be complete which does not include the railways and Provincial debts in the Consti tution. This is an axiom of Federa tion and to attempt to institute a union without reco...

Horse Racing in N.S.W. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 8 January 1898

Horse Racing in N.S.W. It has been frequently remarked, and not without cause, that horse raring and sporting of all kinds, in this colony, has of late years been dominated by the gate-money ele ment, and that true sport has, there fore, almost disappeared from our mids*. That this statement is, to a vpru lpr-r#a Avrpnf rm#» pannnl ho denied, and the cause is not far to seek, viz., centralisation. This has undoubtedly had a baneful influence on the New South Wales turf, if not upon other forms of sport. Where are now the good, old-fashioned, courtly meetings of olden times ? Races like the Wagga Cup now re tain but a shadow of their former glory, while other important fixtures have altogether disappeared from the racing calender. In their places we have a series of miserable pony scrambles in and around Sydney, where racing of a kind is to be wit nessed nearly every day in the week, and very often at night as well. If the object of racing be the im provement of the breed of horses, ...

Timor. [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 8 January 1898

Timor. (Pkou oub Cobwotondent.) Qatnrday being New Year's Day, a committee of local geutlemen held a raoe meeting on tbe Isis River course, Tbe morning being fine there was a very fair attendance, and the racing was pood. I should like to suggest, with all dae respeot to the committee, that it would probably have been better bad they taken into consideration the other Rnnrta vhip.li vuarn f.n ha ImM in Hin out-lying districts ou that day, viz., the Wallabadah races, and the Gundy foot races, before deciding to hold their raoe meeting on that day. There is no doubt more would have been present had it not been for these. For my own part I think Anniversary Day, 26th Jauuary. would have been a better day, and would have suited the public better. There is no good end to be gained by one part of the district going against another. I was iu Gumly on New Year's night, and several people told me that they would have attended the races had they been held on another day. The weather for the p...

Dances Who Became Famous [Newspaper Article] — The Murrurundi Times and Liverpool Plains Gazette — 8 January 1898

l-iiiaes IVIia itw.mte famous. At the age of 12 Sir Isaac. Newton was sent to the public school at Grontliam, and, according to Ms own confession, he was :it ihe outset very inattentive io his studies and always occupied a low position in the school. On one oc casion he even stood last in the lowest form but one. An amusing anecdote will bear repetition. The boy who stood next above him gave him a nasty kick in the stomach one morning as they were on their way to sclionl. At the close oi the days studios Newton --hal- leiiged his nggivs&n- to fight, which be ing accepted, the twain adjourned t.- the churchyard, accompanied by a crowd of youthful spectators. The battle be gan iu earnest, ..and although Isaac's antagonist was lay far the more power ful, he made up for this disadvantage by displaying a considerable amount of pluck and perseverance. In the end hi.s opponent had to admit himself beaten. The schoolmaster's son, who had be«=n an eye-witness of the struggle, told Ne...
