A magisterial inquiry was hold at Doon on the 20th November, before Mr Shorriner, touchiog the death of James West, who dial very suddenly at Young's shanty on the evening of the 24th. A posl-morlemn expamination made bhy Dr Rey nolds showed: that the man had been a groat drinker, and that, the Imniediato cautse of dieath was serous apoplexy brought on by indulgence in his favourite vice. (Defore Messrs Heath and Sharpe.): Lnwrence Power ileaded guilty to wilfully dasaging a lorge pier glass, the property of Matthew M'N'llv, but as the prosecutor did not appear, he was discharged. Edwin Saintbill pleaded guilty to a charge of furious riding in a public place, and was fined lOs or 48 hours' inprisoment. LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY.     Tuesday, 7th December. THE ESSENDON RAILWAY. In reply to Mr King, Mr Longmore said that the Essendon Railway, as a portion of the North-Eaetern line, woul I be placed in repair as soon as possible. CHEAP RAILWAYS. Mr. F. L. Smith drew the attention of the Minister of Railways to statements in the Home News of last October, entitled the Fairlie Engines and Steam Carriages, and the Portmadoc and Festiniog Railway in North Wales, and asked whether the Government would take into consideration the advisability of adopting a similar class of engines and rolling stock, and a similar gauge to those described on all future lines to be constructed in Victoria. The line alluded to in the statement was eleven miles in length, had been worked for six years, and paid six per cent. An immense saving would result fron the adoption of a similar system in this colony on the new line. The engineer of the Pertmadoc line was coming out to this colony, ...
