Palmwoods. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

Palmwoods. There has been a great stir here since ]the meeting of the Shire Council, owing to the resignation of Cr. Dalton, and the intention of the Woombve peoole of running a man for the seat is considered a piece of downright impudence on their part in tijying to get the: seat, as they have ;really two.members there now who |ha veto pass through Woombye. They want the last seat, but there is not much fear ex pressed here of la Woombye man going in, as PaimJR'Oods, Montville, and Eudlo c-ui produce just as good a lot of men as Woombye. A meeting of the ratepayers was held on Wednesday night, to con sider the advisability of running a man for the vacant seat on the Council. There was a fair attend ance of ratepayers, but had the night been a fine one a much larger gathering; would have been present. Mr. F.: Shurvell occuped the chair. Much discussion ensued on the motion that Mr. Fewtrell be, requested to allow himself to be nominated, but that gentleman de clined, giving as; his ...

Woodford. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

W«5odford. The last week or two has been very fine — sopiiij weather — but rain has again set in steady and soaking. Let: jus hope it will soon clear again, fori sufficient has fallen to meet all rejqu rements for some weeks to comej The nett pi;oc-£ds of the late social amount? to ^15 ns., which sum will go to tjhe Brisbane Hos pital. This result is most pleasing and creditable! to; all those who so kindly contributed towards the success of- tli el affair. I forgot to mention last -veek that two little girls assisted tp augment the funds of the social by selling pretty but ton-holebouqu£ts,theirnames being Ethel King and Phylis Home, and there were ver# few who did not re spond to the gentle pleadings of the bonnie little bouquet vendors. A considerable : area of scrub is being felled this season at Mount Mee and Dclaney's Creek, which shows that onri settlers are getting to work in earnest. Farming and dairying is certainly increasing rapidly in the Woodtord and Hope toun district...

Peachester. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

Peacfaester. The school concert and dance which eventuated on the nth in stant will linger^ in the memories of the scholars as well aa the audi ence which graced the building that night for a long time to come, i The rendering of the various pieces ! and acts of the ijuveniles showed j what careful and patient trainin j j they had received at the hands of their efficient lady teaefcer. Miss Millegan. The attendance was considered to be at least sco, so that financially the function exceeded j the most sanguine expectations of ? the committee. The funds thus raised will be devoted to getting i new desks and oiher school requi sites, and the committee and the parents may well give Miss Mille gan unstinted praise for her p_art of the necessary wojrk. The building had been nicely decorated with flags and palms, and! all the children taking part were dressed in white and red sashes. Although each and all agree that all the parts were good, the dnet ' Zachariah and Sophia,' rendered by Mi...

Caboolture. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

Caboolture. The annual social in connection with the St. Lawrence Church, Caboolture, was held on Friday eveuiug last, in the Temperance Hall. The attendance was very large, and the Social was an un quali Bed success iin every way. The proceeds, upwards of ^10, are for repairs to the chiirch. Great credit is due to bhe ladies and gentlemen to whose energejtic work the suc cess can be attributed.' The re freshments, which jwere on a very generous scale, jwere provided by j the nunierous friends of the church, j and this part of the programme was admirably managed by Mrs. Row- 1 son, assisted especially by Mrs. 1 Cartner, Mrs. Harper, and Miss ! Newman. A pianoforte duet by j Mrs. Zillman and Miss Daisy Mat- j thews proved a pleasing prelude to the evening-'s entertainment, and this was followed by a song, ' Queen of the Earth,' by M|rs. Jarvis. The j children's performance, which in- | eluded a grand march and the old English may pole! dance, came next, the maypole, with! its many ga...

DISTRICT NEWS. Buderum. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

DISTRICT NEWS. (By Our 0\\?|-t CorrespoxdijntsO Buderum. We have again been favoured with splendid! rains, which com menced falling steadily on Monday evening, continuing the greater part of Tuesday, and at the time of writing there jis every appearance ot mor.: to follow. We could not be favoured withj better weather, for just now fye young oranges are setting, the trees being quite a pic ture to look !at with their young wood and blossoms. Strawberries^ and goose-berries are leaving here pretty freely, but owing to the enormous quantity of the lat ter, prices are very low, the jam factories refusing them. Not to be outdone, however, two of our en terprising farmers who have large quantities of them are dealing with them rather than allow them to go to waste. The one is canning, and the other is js-m making. Advance Buderum ! j Some of your Readers no doubt will be interested jto learn the pro gress of the pink wax scale which is so destructive tp the orange and mango trees. It j h...

TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

To the! Editor. Sir, — In view of the controversy taking place in your columns, allow me to ask a few 1 juestions relative to council work :i — 1. Do our cc uncillors pay at tention to thie business before all council meetings!? 2. Did they, ever pass for pay ment on or abputj August-. 29, 1899, an account for £% 5s, £1 5s. of which was paid t|- a councillor for the use of a hprsejfor council work, and if such jmoifey was paid by cheque No. 33?' I 3. Did sucjh aouncillor sign, in his own handwriting, voucher No. 190, as acknowledgement of pay ment for services 'rendered ? Should thejse. questions be' an swerable in the affirmative, then I ask what right }iad they to vote this money, £iid further I ask our auditor:; of that jtime if they were not neglecting tjieir duty by the ratepayers in j not discovering and reporting the .affair. And further, an explanatioij should be demanded by the ratepayers from both the council and the jauditors. — Yours, &c, I i Interested.
