DOGS. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 August 1866

S . DOGS. ': (npat TIE SATEDAnY nrET1E.) We have heard of a lady who, on being rpreroached for taking her dog. with .her on a visit, retaliated upon her pssailant with the accusation, " Why, you take your children! ' ALt the risk of outraging: whatever maternal sentiment may exist in the breast of our readers, we must own that we think that this was a very legitimate, o quw~que., Tue human pet is doubtless a being of higher capabilities, and a more august future, titan the canine; but to those who 'have no personal interest in its. possible development; it stands on pretty much the same footing. Both alike are nuisances that we tolerate for the sake of their owners?.: Whether our friend be a child-lover or .a dog-lover, w~ must take him with his inouembrances. If we wish to enjoy his society, we must be content to turn our drawing-rooms into nurseries or kennels. THE RESULT OF THE CHALLENGE. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 August 1866

THE RESULT OF THE CHALLENCGE. When Mr. Kuipe, some few weeks ago, was elected to a seat in the borough council of Prahran, we ventured on the assertion that had his antecedents been as well known before as they were after his election, lie would not have been returned. This es pression of opinion gave. great umbrage to Mr. Knipe saud his party; and brought dowen onus a largo amount of censure. rWe went still further. We invited Mr. Knipe to rdsign hIis:seat, and thus firnish an oppor tunity for proving whether we were right br wrong. He did not. do this--we did not expect lhe would. This occurred before tihe trial in the Supreme Court, which ended by ousting him from office. Then," a vacancy having occurred," he accepted the challenge -though it must be confessed it was rather an Irish mbdo of doing so. He at once sun nounced his: intention of contesting the vacancy thus caused. A committee of iis admirers was formed to secure his re-election, and a subscription entered into to defr...

THE COMING ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 August 1866

I THEI COMING ELECTIONS. I Thursday next will be the day for elect ing co~ncillers to fill the annual. vacancies provided fora by the Minicipal Act, In both Prahran and St. Kilda the contest.pro misesa to be 'f a very ecitihrg eharacter, In each borough there are three vacancies, and in each six candidates nominated. The re.. tiring councillors. iu Prahran (fessrs. Snow all, Vail, and Hutchings): offer themselves tor re-election, and the new candidates are Messrs. Es?cey, J; White;. and A. F. White. The question upon which the contest will hinge is the reduction of the town clerk's salary. Messrs.. Vail,, H.tch?egs and ILscey are in favour of this, and Messrs. Snowball and the two Whites against it. The frields of both parties are working energetically, and each side speaks confidently of success.
