A TRUE AUSTRALIAN MAGAZINE. [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 27 January 1914

A TRUE AUSTRALIAN MAGAZINE. The February issue of " Life " is the breeziest and most widely representative number,, of this popular Australasian magazine we have seen. The frontpieee depicts a series of adventures with a kangaroo on a wayback station in New South Wales; a railway president in a stirring sketch shows how the break down gang of a great railway system works; Mr A. H. E. Mattingly, tho premier Nature photographer of Aus tralia, outlines in a succession of won derful pen and camera pictures the life story of the penguin ; Mr Carlyle Smythe writes a vigorous article on Australia as an colonising power, and an anonymous writer criticises freely the administration of the Northern Territory. Of course, Dr. Fitchett handles the political history of Australia and New Zealand for the past month in his usual masterly fashion. Even the instalment of Jack London's serial story, " The Valley of the Moon," deals with the adventures of a couple who are seeking to find a home on tho l...

The Rural Industry. [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 27 January 1914

The Rural Industry. It is not much encouragement for men to go on thn land and engage in agricultural pursuits when thoy find themselves harassed by the prepos terous demands of the Rural Workers XJnion. In self dufenee the fnrm»i8 of Riverina are combining to help each other and dispense, as- far as possible with hired labor, as well as organising bands of workers to send to the'e iast to load the grain ships if the wharf laborers refuse to handle what t!vy are pleased to call '' black" wheal, t iat. is on which fre« labor lias br>en em ployed in producing and carting,,, So we seem to ■ be on the verge of yet another industrial trouble.

ENGINEERING. In the engineering columns of the "Argus" the following references were made in reference to Ball-bearings:— [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 27 January 1914

ENGINEERING. In the engineering columns of the " ArguB" the following references were made in reference to Ball-bearings :— What is believed to be the largeBt ball-bearing in Australia was sent up to Nhill last week, where' it will be fitted to form the third bearing carrying the shaft of Noske Brothers' flour mill engine. The driving shaft of this engine is Tin. in diameter, and the illustration (with a 2in. bearing inside) of this "S.K.F.," which was imported by Gardner, Waern and Co., gives a good idea of its massive proportions. Noske Brothers are doing away with plain bearings, and in the near future at the mill shafting will be carried on. S.K.F. ball-bearings, with double rows of self-aligning balls. It is anticipated that there will be a reduction of friction amounting to 50 per cent. A very interesting example of the application of the60 ball-bearings may be seen at the Great Southern Consols mine at Rutherglen. Increased lifting power was required for the cage some little ...

VICTORIAN VITICULTURE. REVIEW OF THE INDUSTRY. PROSPECTS OF EXPANSION. [Newspaper Article] — Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser — 27 January 1914

VICTORIAN VITICULTURE. REVIEW OF THE INDUSTRY. PROSPECTS OF EXPANSION. The progress of the vitieultural in dustry in Victoria, or elsewhere in Aus tralia for the matter of that, has not been marked by the rapid strides that experts have always predicted. This leisurely and broken advance, however, in no way argues the unsuitability of natural conditions either for the propogation of the vine or for the production of good wine. Viticulturists are in general agreement that both climate and soil are unsurpassed. The industry, in the past, was in the ranking. Now that it has proved itself, a steady advance is assured. It haB had "its ups and downs, like all other huge undertakings in their initial stages, and the vinegrowers have bravely suffered the vicissitudes of fortune and the sharp alternations of failure and seeming success. Statistics, which are accounted the arbiter of development in all these matters, do not give a clear finding as to the exact condition of viti culture in Vic...
