He was a free immigrant, and had been three months in prison. There had been some provocation owing to some larrikins having rhrown sand at him ; he was so excited, that he was not aware that he had a knife in his possession ; he was indebted to the Crown for accepting a plea of a common assault. His Honor the Chief Justice said this was a very bad case, which had been brought on by drink, the curse of this town. He regretted that the larrikins were not before him.. This new industry has been successfully established in the colo nies, and it is mainly due to the interest taken by a kindred society that ostriches have been acclimatised and the culture of feathers has become an important item of com merce. As a proof of our statement we quote the following report given by Mr. W. Malcolm, J.P., of .Gawler, who has started ostrich farming: — 'I am glad to say the ostri...

^FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1882. ?G\rea,t sympathy was felt yesterday ?for the two unfortunate persons who ?were placed in the dock charged with kl capital offence. It is very seldom ?indeed that persons are placed m a Bgirnilar position, and it is well that it Ks so. The Crown was compelled to ?do its duty, and had no alternative ?than to press for punishment if it was ?proved that the crime of murder had Bt-een committed ; 'but the colouring Hput upon the case by Mr. Howell completely exonerated the prisoners, Bind the favorable -summing up of His ?Honor the Chief Justice left the jury ?eery little to do. It was a very pain Kul case to listen to, the more so where n, little girl had. to give direct Evidence against her mother ; but so Bremarkably well did she give that ftvidence that it showed there was no ?notive for committing the deed be gpnd self-preservation. It was painful Bo hear the little girl depose that she maw her mother give the gun to the ?prisoner Hicks, and told him to fi...

LAW INTELLIGENCE. SUPREME COURT— CRIMINAL SITTINGS. (Before His Honor ths Chief Justice and comvion juries.) FRIDAY, October 6. The Court resumed its sittings at ten o'clock. MANSIiAXraHTEB. Frederick Scanlan surrendered to his bail, and was charged with having on the 13th September last caused the death of a man named William Barr, by administering a poisonous compound. The prisoner was defended by Mr. F. M. Stone. The Attorney General, in opening the case, alluded to the circumstances attending the death of a pensioner named W. Barr, by the administering of an overdose of opium. He spoke in high terms of the prisoner, who had been a long time in the service of the Imperial Government as a compounder of medicine, and had held certificates of competency as a compounder. The question to consider was whether the prisoner had exercised sufficient care and caution, or gross carelessness, he not being a dulyj.qualified registered medical practi tioner. Jas. W.
