EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AT CANBERRA TELOPEA PARK SCHOOL. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 June 1926

EDUCATIONAL FACILI TIES AT CANBERRA TELOPEA PARK SCHOOL. The Melbourne papers, and Wyaney papers, too, are still airing their views concerning the alleged lack of educational facilities at Canberra. With a view of contradicting this absurd fallacy, the following information is supplied. 1. A complete course of education from kindergarten to University entrance examination has been in operation since 1924 at Telopea Park School. 2. The present staff of twelve teachers in cludes in its personnel a Bachelor of Science^ a Bachelor of Economics, and a Bachelor of Arts, all graduates from Sydney University. As far as the writer is aware, no school in New South Wales, ranking as an ordin ary public school, has such large percentage of specialists, or is so fortunate in its staff. 3. The secondary portion of the school is divided into two sections, one preparing pupils for the Intermediate and Leaving Cer tificate examinations, leading up to the Uni versity and the Teachers* College, the ot...

A HAPPY THOUGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 June 1926

A HAPPY raOHöHT, .At the opening of the Causeway Hall, the Indoor Recreation' Committee intended pre senting the Chairman of the Commission (Mr. J. H. Butters), who officially opened the building, with a miniature silver tea kettle, as a souvenir of the first big effort by that Committee; but it was hot found possible to complete the engraving in time. The Committee therefore delegated the Chairman (Mr. D. Kelly) to make the pre sentation. This he did "on May 19, explain ing the delay, and asking the Chairman to accept the kettle as a memento of the offi cial opening of the first community hall built by voluntary effort in Canberra. Mr. Butters, in accepting the kettle, expressed his thanks for the kind thought that had prompted the gift, but said it was part of his duty, as one deeply interested in the Social Service movement, to officiate at gatherings, when the efforts of the various Committees had reached fruition; he consequently hoped that the presentation of souvenirs would n...

PREHISTORIC EASTLAKE [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 June 1926

NEW SHOPS AT EASTLAKE. PREHISTORIC EASTLAKE An interesting discovery was made here re cently by a local resident, which has caused quite a stir in scientific circles, particularly those interested in early Canberra. To the uninitiated it would appear much like the bone of an ordinary ox-tail, but the fact of its having been found 50 feet under ground leads to its having been submitted to a prominent member of the Boyal Histori cal Society, who promptly obtained a photo graph of it, with a view to its reproduction in one of the world's leading papers. It will V<V-.-. probably be the subject matter of a lec ture at B.V. shortly. A well-known medical man, after careful examination, has given it as his opinion that it is undoubtedly the end vertabrae of an Ichthyosaurus, or possibly an Iguanadon. In either case, he says it is intensely in teresting, as being an early relic of Can berra, Excitement is tremendous locally. STOP PRESS ! The finder of the "relic,** who is a sewer ...
