TOBACCO IN* CAIRNS DISTRICT, Mr. ll. S. Neville, State tobacco. expert, returned from Kamerunga, Nursery yesterday, where arrange- , mente were made for the planting ol a small experimental plot.of cigar, leaf. Mr. Neville also called upon Mr. Mills, who has been cultivating tobacco ou a small patch ahout ono sixteenth of an care in extent, and in the expert's opinion the quality of the leaf shown him was a very su- perior nature indeed. Mr. Mills sta- ted that ho had been offered ls ppr lb in Brisbane for the tobacco, and had deckled to accept this-price. This bears out Mr. Neville's previous cOn-i tcution that a leal of excellent qunli ¡ty cun be grown in the rich, alla* vial soil in the Cairns district. Some experiments were made here before by manufacturers, but owing to the se- lection of a piece of land that was totally unsuited for agricultural pup» poses, nothing came of the venture^

PRACTICAL JOKE. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 6 December 1907

PRACTICAL JOKE.* Thc final concert in the main sal- oon of tho Lusitania was 'marked by un extraordinary incident. The pas- sengers were so delighted with . the Lusitania's record that they sub 'scribed £12ö for the stokers. Then someone suggested that it would be monea to Teceli-ftho money. Pres- ently thc most dilapidated specimen ol' a stoker seen for a long time en- tered the saloon. He was in rags and his face and hands were black with coal dust. Thc passengers ap- plauded him sympathetically when he made a hesitating ungrammatical speech of thanks on behalf pf 'nie and my )i|atcs:' Then, to thc horror pf everyone, he pulled put a disreputab- le PiPO find, requested a match, pb- j serving at the same time that the stokers wished to complain about the insufficient quantity of grog served them. Several of thc ship's officers were present, and the stoker's .con- duct was so astounding that they mutely gazed at him open-mouthed The chairman of the concert tried to persuade the stok...

OLD IDENTITIES. [Newspaper Article] — Cairns Morning Post — 6 December 1907

OLD IDENTITIES* / Mr. Frank Bridgman, a very old ? resident of,Mackay,-was ¿n Towns .ville yesterday. Buring his . visit .(says thc Townsville '"Star") he re newed his acquaintance with Mr. A M. Rheuben-a fellow pioneer, whon he had not met for thirty-six years and incidentally invited his friend to a reurron of early settlers to be held in Mackay about December 14. The gathering is to be confined to men who knew Muckay 40 years ago-Mr. Rheuben's - acquaintance wifli thc place extends back -ll years-and ii says something for the hardiness and persistence of the earlier wfiitemen in North Queensland that some 22 or 23 fruests arc expected to assemble on the occasion. Forty years in tropical Queensland might naturally have been expected to leave very few of what must have been u very small community in Mackay in those days. 3Ir. Rheuben hopes to be able to make thc trip, and has promised this paper an "inside" account of the junction and some reminiscences
