HINTS TO FARMERS. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 25 November 1887

HINTS TO FARMERS. The following tea axioms of agriculture should be remembered by all farmers.* (1.) No lands can be preserved in a high state of fertility unless clover and the grasses are cidtivated in the course of rotation. (2J Deep ploughing greatly improves the pro' ductive power of a variety of soils that are not wet. (3 ) i>nb-soiling sound lands, that i.J, land that is not: wet, is eminently con ducive to increastd production. (4.) All wet land should be draiued. (5 ) Draining of wet lands and marshes adds to their value by making them produce more and better ciops. and producing ttieoi earlier. (|5.) To manure or lime wetlands is to throw manure, lime, and labor away. (7.) Periodical ap plication of ashes tends to keep up the con dition of soils by supplying most.if not all, inorganic substances. (8.) Thorough pre paration of land is absolutely, necessary, to the successful and healthy growth of grope. (9.) Abundant crops cannot be grown for a ouccession, unless care be...

Blackrock. [Newspaper Article] — Petersburg Times — 25 November 1887

Blackrock. Times have been very dull here of late, but they are now improving. The hay harvest is in fall swing and the crops are catting well in the hills, but <ra the plains are not up to much. A great many of the farmers have to cut blighted wheat for hay, which if left for wheat would be useless. While travel ling through the hundreds of Biackrock. Mannanarie, Morgan and Jongala I noticed that the wheat crops are look-1 lag exceedingly well, but a shower of rain now would freshen up the crops again. . . grand concert was held in the Tatina Chapel on Friday, November 4, .and was well attended. The overture was played by Miss Campbell, and was fairly well rendered, as was also a song " You'll remember me," by Miss E. Campbell. Miss Giles sung " True till death*' in a very deserving manner. A comedy "Sent from School for Scandal,'" by Mr Carruthers and Miss Sowerbv, was moderately well given, and a song by Mr Tamblm, " The Midship Mite," was also well sung. The final son...
