CORRESPONDENC E I is to be distinctly understood that wte is uo way identifjyourselvres with the opinion expressed by our crrespondents. (To the Editor) Sir.-One looks with 'amazement at the dilapidated condition of your build ings, considering the manner in which they were built, although many years ago, of the best and most lasting ma terial.'ith reasonable care they would have stood the test for many years yet to come, but greed and avarice have blinded the land-grabber to tihe wants of the town. Let your surveyor straighten things up. I know of houses -and he should know them too where the rent is reasonable and the tenants are making good money out of them as boardiing houses, not far from collapsible, and, with an impoverished water supply, dangerous to a degree and a filthy disgrace. One place, well known to somne of your public men, draws its supply from an obsolete well in the middle of a poultry yard, which beggars all for filth. Waste of poultry, when kil ed, thrown out f...

COURRD ES PO N DE NC E It is to be distinctly understood that we un 00o wOay identijfyourselves with the opinion expressed by our correspondenlts. (To the Editor.) Sir,-Allow mie space in your columns to contradict a report presented by tha President of the Portland Shire at the last meeting of that body where Ie states that registered road stock lhave been iu pounded off tihe Hotspur town common. I beg to inforim h]im that no such thinig has over been done; that ainy stock regis tered on roads are not interfered with by our herdsman, only by sending notice to the road ranger to rcmove them. I may state that our herdsman and the East Riding road ranger came to a mnutual agreemient not to impound each other's stock, but to let each other knoow and they would remiovo them. Hoping this will show thie ratepayers who have stock graz ing oni tliohe roads that no such thilng i5 being done, and will show the President of the Portland Shire tlhat lie has been very much misinformed.-I am, you...

THEY SAY [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 23 March 1914

THEY SAY That the Mayor deserves the thanks of travellers and the public generally in protesting againso the holding-up of passenger trains for the sake of race meetings, picnics and dog lights. These clubs are asking too much. If they want to nmeet the conivenience of pa trons let them engage special trains. That the Borough Council will be wise to let some other council take the initiative in the matter of unwhole some fish. Thousands of so-called "wormy" 'couta are sold eviry week in Melbousne right under tihe nose of the Scentral Board of Health. That the trouble in Portland is not so much that the fish are sotb as it is that they are hard to get. All through the summer the cry of the visitors was that they coulid not get fi.-h for love or money. Tlhat the skeleton of a man found in German East Africa is believed to he 150,000 years(Jold. Nothing so annoying; nothing so irrit ating, It's a hard and trying position. Leave it alone and you can hardly bear it. Relief and cure have come at last. People have put it to the test. DRIK DRIK. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 23 March 1914

DRIK DRIK. (From our correspondeub. The longest spell of dry, hot weather that we have had here for a long time wase brought to an end last Tuesday afternoon by a severe thunder storm, sacdmpanied by a heavy fall of rain. Tuesday night and' Wednesday thun der was still beard, with light showers. On Thursday a nice eteady rain fell nearly all day, giving good hopes of plenty of feed for stock during winter. Bush fires are stopped for the present. A,great scope of country all round us has been burnt; no houses, but grass end fences. I understand that Mr. P. Malseed was the greatest loser, having nearly all his grass, a lot of fencing and a quantity of wattle bark burnt. Mr. McLean lost neartly all his grass and a liitle fencing. We have a new teacl.er in the State school, a Mr. Motheson. The following convezshtion took place the other day between a boy attending the school and a resident. Resident-Did you like your old teacher ? Boy-No. 11-Why? Boy-He didn't teach anything. R And do y...

STRANGER THAN FICTION. [Newspaper Article] — Portland Observer and Normanby Advertiser — 23 March 1914

STRANCER THAN FICTION. (DY PETER,) Peter is not as much perturbed as might be expected by a They Say in a recent '"Observer" to the effect that although he ridicules the L.O.B. skim milkers he is one himfelf. This is simply a wowserism. He sells no dairy produce, but buys it. But future dic tionaries will defioo a skimmilker as one who utilises this by-product in rearing pisgs or poddy calves, and when Peter was dairying for a few months last spRing, just so that he could write up dhe subject from experience, he gave this valuable fluid to the skimanilkers' dogs, althouih he was kept awake at nights by doiens of the poor, starving brutes howling and fighting for the last drop. He knows that those who spend their lives in trying to mitigate the hard lot of the outcasts of India are often themselves stigmatised as pa riahs, and he expects no better re quital from those he lives and labours amongst. Even if they call binm a wowser be wiil continue to strive by the force of example to c...
