TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 14 May 1891

TO ThE EDlTOR OF TILE CemNsICLE. Srm,-I was very much surprised at seeing in the last issue of your paper a letter from Mr. Steuart, in which he states that, in selling the Old Town Pump, he acted under instructions from the Public WorkVe Com mittee. I, as a member of that committee, give the sttement al emphatic denial We did not instruct Mir. Steuart or any one else to sell it. What we did do, on representa tions being make to us (Cr. Carver and I never having seen it) that the pump was a rust-eaten, worn-out old thing, was to re. commend to the Council that the offerof 30s. he accepted, instead of storing it in the council-yard, as ordered at the previous meeting. Mr. Steuart must be very well aware that it was a matter for the Council to decide whether it should he sold or not. If he took the responsibility of selling it on himself, he should stand to it, and rear the blame; or, if he took his instructions from any other source, he should put the blame on the right shoulders.
