Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1908. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 August 1908

9Iliindra & qa ftanda d NEC TEMXER NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1908. WE are reminded the more of the race for the naval supremacy of the seas of the world by the visit of the American fleet. Coming to our shores essen tially on a mission of peace, and welcomed as they are at every British port whence they call, they are, never- I theless, an embodiment of latent force, I of a hidden destructive force that is i beyond the realms of imagination. Insignificant in its beginnings the United States navy has gradually' grown in power and strength until it is declared to-day to be the second naval power in the world. Situated as we are, with the teeming hordes of Asia within close proximity to our northern ports, we must, indeed, fool I thankful that it is so. The blood of I kinship is in the veins of both Ameri cans and Australians, and we, all of us, give unqualified assent to the I laconic expression made by Commodore Tutnall. when he went unasked to the I assistance of the En...

Councillor J. C. Wightman, J.P., pre- sident of the shire, occupied the chair and having stated the object of the gathering, said it gave him great pleasure to be pre- sent for two reasons. He then introduced Mr. Thos. Hunt, M.L.A., and asked this gentleman to declare the building open. Mr. Hunt, who had a cordial reception, said it gave him pleasure to be present on such an interesting occasion, and he had ...

Marysville. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 August 1908

Marysville. (From our own Correspondent). We are having nice mild weather after a week of frosty nights. Fify-six points of rain fell during the last two days. The following nominations were received by the returning oficer for the Marysville Board of Advice—Messrs. T. Barton, J.P., D. M'Intyre (Marysville), R. Scott (Buxton) and John Nichols and A. Neil (Narbethong). There appeers to be a healthy revival in mining on the Woods' Point road. The Golden Bower is looking well and is getting ready for a crushing we wish them good luck. After lying idle for some time the plucky shareholders have started operations again with renewed vigor. Stookman's Reward and the Golden Secret mines are also taken up again, and will soon be at work. A football match was played at Narbe- thong on Saturday last, between Marysville and Narbethong, and after a ding-dong game resulted in win for the visitors by 8-10 to 6-8. The teams were entertained in the evening at Roche's hotel by the home team.

A social was held at Taggerty on the 14th inst., under the auspices of the local social club, the spacious hall being comfortably filled; and if the extent of enjoyment maiy be calculated by the speed at which the sets were performed an ex ceedingly good time must have existed. Mr luubh Kerr haLd charge of the floor and carried out his duty in an efficient manner. The music was supplied by Mrs E. Maudouit and assisted at Intervals by the Scorah family, whose high-class mlusic is always a pleasure to dance to. Among those present was a drag load from Thornton. mostly ladies, who created quite a favorable impression in the minds or rather in the hearts of the young men of Taggerty. Dancing kept going until 2 o'clock and three cheers greeted the visitors as the drag moved homeward, while the party sang response in sym phonious voices with Good Bye Taggerty Town. It is intended that a return party be arranged for the next social at Thorn ton.
