It is reported from Cork that the ten ants on the property of Captain Harrison, of Castle Harrison, near Charleville,. have ' just completed the purchase of their holdings under Lord Ashbourne's Act. There are nearly 30 tonants on tho property, which is situated near tho rich and thriving distriot of Charleville. Tho value of the land formed an impor tant element of consideration in the negotiations which were carried on in the National League rooms during a period of four or five months. The basis finally arrived at, upon which the tenants should purchase their holdings and upon which the landlord was agreeable to sell, was 15 years' purchase of the existing rents. This was equivalent to 23i years, pur chase at Griffith's valuation. The hang ing gale was wiped out, and the agree ment involved.au understanding to pay tho half-year's rent, due in September, based on 'the amount of the annual' instalmen...

Women in the Newspaper Offices of America. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 8 October 1886

' Women in the Newspaper Offices of America. M03T people unfamiliar with newspaper offices have a large amount of curiosity -about the workers in them, and especially about women :who may chance to earn their living by writing. A woman journalist' is regarded by the general public as a peculiar creature, somewhat isolated from the rest of her sex by the fact of her occupation and by her knowledge of the mysteries of newspaper making. The Utile army 'of . women writers for the pres^ is constantly increas ing, though there are still only about 500 in America who do regular editorial work on papers of position. The three great ^requisites for. a woman journalist are good health, good sense, and good temper. ' - Armed ? with ! these, ! any girl who really wishes to enter journalism, and has a knack at ? writing, . may hope for success. There is always a market for the best ; work, and editors are pro gressive people, who recognise fully the growing need of feminine representation in the...

Extraordinary Feat of a "Steeple Jack" [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 8 October 1886

Extraordinary Feat of a * 'Steeple .lack ' In honour of his Majesty's birthday a journeyman gilder named Joseph Percher at Vienna, performed a feat of almost unparalleled ' foolhardiness. He , had made a bet that he would climb unassis ted to the gilded pinnacle of St. Stephen's steeple and- plant an imperial flag there | with a garland ;--£ flowers. The climb- I ing was not to be effected from the platform of the tower, but from its base in the Stefans-Platz, the height thence to the gilt' ball and cross being 432 Ger man feet, six inches. At 1 1 one evening Percher arrived on the Stefans-Platz with a small party of friends, tied his shoes round his neck, and began his perilous ascent by means of the lightning conductor. Swarming up tho metal rod with the agility of an ape, aud resting his feet on every ' projecting piece of stonework, ho took thirty-five minutes to reach the platform of the tower. From this point until within 12 feet of the pinnacle the: ascent was comparatively e...

? ? .Vcr j Hard Lluei ? ? ? ? .....I It is not ofton that the records of Dis trict Courts furnish news at all approach ing tho nature of romance or sensation, but a case which came boforo tho Metropolitan Court recently brought to light a tale of the sea that might havo furnished tho nucleus : of one of those narratives of adventure in tho South Seas which are so fascinating to boy readers. The plaintiff in the case was engaged by the defendant to go to New Ireland, ono of the islands off tho south eastern extremity of Now Guinea, to trade with the natives and get cocoanuts and copra — tho sun-dried kernel of the co'coanut — for tho benefit of the defend ant, who promised to send a supply of provisions to plaintiff. The plaintiff went to tho island, sot about his work, and remained tliere for somo timo waiting the supply of provisions, but they failed to come, ?' whereby,' says the suffering plaintiff, he ' became sick and ill on tho said island, and lay for several weeks in a dying...

CABLEGRAMS. LONDON, TUESDAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Herald and Northern Districts Advertiser — 8 October 1886

CABLEGRAMS. LONDON, Tuesday. The Queen Regent of Spain has been advised to pardon the rebels sentenced to death, through the Madrid riots. The steamer Austral has arrived with a shipment of 3573 carcases of frozen mutton, in good condition. The Russian agent in Bulgaria has left Sofia ; he had arranged a meeting and was shouted down. He warned the audience against -any persistent disregard of Russian advice, and it is believed it was his intention to provoke a rupture with the Regency. A deputation waited on Mr. Gladstone to present him with the freedom of the city of Cork. Other towns followed, and Mr. Gladstone, in reply, said, that during his continuance of office he had hoped to see a settlement of the Irish difficulty, and he believed the cause would ultimately triumph, and he hoped promptly. Another outrage has been committed by Moonlighters in the .County Cork,, wherein a raid was made on a farmer's house and two of his daughters shot. : H. M. S. Miranda has been recalled fro...
