LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 13 July 1865

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. LInRARY FOR THE KILMORE HOSPITAL. By the report of the House surgeon of the Kilmore Hospital read at the meeting of the Board of Management, on Tuesday even ing, we notice among other things that that gentleman recommends the addition of a li brary to the institution and was of opinion that the want could be supplied by an ap peal to the benevolent and well-disposed in habitants of the district without incurring any expense, or drawing upon the funds of the hospital. We believe that the project would meet with universal support and that everybody in the district having a book to spare would contribute it towards the forwarding of so laudable an object, and we may say that reading would greatly contri bute both morally and physically to the hap piness and comfort of the patients. Any of the members of Committee of the Hospital willthankfully receive contributions of books, ete, for the abovenamed object. We would strongly urge upon the inhabitants the want spoken ...

THE FOURTH JURY AT DAYLESFORD. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 13 July 1865

THE FOURTH JULY AT DAYLES- FORD. (FROM THE MERCURY) The American citizens resident in Dayles- ford held a banquet at Jamison's hotel in that town in honour of the great event, at which Mr. B. H. Fernald was chairman, Mr. F. J. Hart vice-chairman, and last, not least, Mr. Doolittle was orator. The oration was the usual kind of effusion, excepting as re- gards its termination, which was an allusion to the civil war, and ran as follows :—"Yet, after long years of prosperity, how were the counsels of Washington forgotten. Our country became embroiled in that unfortunate and unhappy war which so nearly wrecked our noble Union. But now, thank God, a better day seems to have dawned. May we not trust and believe that those who shall come after will avoid the rocks and quick- sand on which the noble ship was near being stranded, and guide her helm to better pur- pose and through fairer waters ? And will not the examples of bravery displayed both by North and South teach the world that united...

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS. [Newspaper Article] — Kilmore Free Press and Counties of Bourke and Dalhousie Advertiser — 13 July 1865

MISCELLANEOUS EXTRACTS. The execution of Peter Dotselaere for the murder of Catherine Sarah Jacobs, on the 29th May, took place on Thursday at the Melbourne gaol in the presence of about 20 persons. With the particulars of the crime for which the wretched man suffered death the public are thoroughly familiar. The murdered woman was his paramour and had been cohabiting with him for some time, and it is more than doubtful, from the evidence adduced at the trial, that he participated in the earnings of her prostitution. Dotselaere never attempted to deny his guilt, the only palliation he could urge for a remission of his sentence was that it was his first offence; that he was drunk at the time and maddened by jealousy. He has repeatedly asserted how- ever, that he frequently proposed to marry Jacobs, but that she as often put off the sub- ject to a future time. So little doubt was felt as to his guilt that no effort was made to obtain a respite for him, and he appears to have from the ...
