MEMORIES Of THE PAST. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 15 November 1879

MEMORIES Of THE VAST. THE table upon wliicli Napoleon III signed the declaration of war by France agaiimt Prussia at St. Cloud, in July, 1870, has been just added, with the sanction of the German Emperor, to the liohenzollcrn Museum in Berlin. When St. Cloud wan bombarded and occupied by the German troops during the operations against I'aris, the table was saved, and token in the first place to Versailles aud afterwards to Berlin. The table is round, about fire feet in diameter, and covered in the centre with green cloth; the outer rim of the top being of ebony, richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl and various metals, and bound with an ornamented gold ring. Under the top of the table are six drawers of the form of a truncated segment of a circle, and each provided with a cunningly-constructed lock; the inner part of the drawers being of mahogany, the outside of quaintly-carved and inlaid motlicr-of-pcarl. By the side of the table stands an arm-chair covered with green leather, which, ...

SPORTING EXTRAORDINARY. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 15 November 1879

fiPOKTING EXTRAORDINARY. IT is curious to note the change of ideas, observes tlie Broad Arrow. During the first China Wai it was considered that on officer had done something at least infra dig. in taking a pot shot at a Chinese some distance off during a temporary lull of hostilities; and the late Lord Gough, with all his faults a chivalrous soldier, and the "bravest of the brave," in tiis Indian wars peremptorily pro hibited such trials of skill. But in Zululand, if we may trust our contemporaries, a differ ent feeling prevails, and on a recent occasion a "spccial correspondent," in company with an officer, pathetically tells us what bad luck he had when operating upon some Zulu scouts at a distance of only SOU yards. His companion had put the enemy to flight by a shot; but, says Uie 11 amateur," " to my intense disgust, after carefully covering one of the fugitives, I got a miss-fire, followed by two others in succession." These "black buck" appear to make good sport, and as a tr...

The English Channel Viaduct [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 15 November 1879

The English Channel Viaduot THE London correspondent of a New Zea land paper furnishes the following interesting Article: These are days of wonders, and electricians and engineers are the conjurers. To most . people the idea of throwing a viaduct over the English Channel would appear utterly v:6ionary; yet it is ono seriously and scienti fically put forward. Sir John Hawkshaw has his scheme of tunnelling under the Channel, and it is straightway voted a chimera. Nevertheless, work has been quietly going on, and although nothing has yet been attempted towards the tunnel itself, shafts have been sunk, borings made, and a vast amount of money spent, but not wasted, in obtaining valuable preliminary informa tion. The result has been to prove that in nil human probability the project is perfectly feasible, and the only difficulty is the moiicv. The engineer's estimate, which I happen to have seen, puts the cost at some twelve round millions: this of course means half as much again in real...

IT is always interesting to read the prophecies of the knowing ones who write to the sport ing papers after the event is lost and Won. "Nemo," "Whalebone," and indeed, aft the Brisbane and Sydney writers were a long way out in their "tips," the winners not being mentioned, while the expected placed horses ran nowhere. " Augur" in the Aus tralasia* awarded the Cup to Wellington or Secundum, neither of' which horses were placed; but at the same time Darriwell-and that wonderful oolt Suwarrow, are spoken of by " Augur" as likely to stand a show.
