The Weather. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

The V/eather. , 1'or a'* week 'or more this has'beon the. main topic for, consideration, for the simple reason that it has boon forcod upon one and all by the intense heat which has prevailed throughout the district, except near' the seashore. In .uaenio me .xnoremomoter tor seven or. eight days up to Monday night ranged from 100 to 114 dogrees, and ove'n during the night rarely graded below ()8. This is the result of what is termed a heat wave — whither it conies and whither it goes we are not told ; but of one fact everyone was painfully apparont, namoly, that its inconvenience was over present. It almost made one feel cool to learn by wire that heavy ruin stopped tho orickot mutch' in Mel bourne 011 Monday. We hope a 'similar visitation will put a stop to our present 'wet mo...

Kyogle Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

Kyogle Notes. 1905 greeted Kyogle with one of the warmest days of the season. Monday, the 2nd, put the previous day in the shade, the thermometor ranging from 105 to 112, and some houses even report a higher temperature, but I think 107 was about a fair average. Wyangarie re ported 112. The ' heat wave' will, if it continues, do no end of harm to the maize crops, some of which are a picture. To begin close to Kyogle and go up   Lynch's Creek way, Messrs. J. Reeves and Co. really have nice looking crops, and when Lynch's Creek is reached, Messrs. J. Burt's and Field Bros, crops are very hard to beat Messrs. Fulton and Larkin's crops are also very good. If the abovementioned crops are not killed, with this heat wave, and have a fair chance, one will hear of a few record yields. The building trade is still going brisk, and within the next two days one should see a good many places on the way. The saw-mill being closed is preventing a fair start, as a good many contractors ...

Science and Immortality. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 6 January 1905

Science and Immortality. Dr. Osiicr Regius, Professor of Medi cine at Oxford University, has recently, given to the world bis views on ' Science and Immortality.' He was chosen to deliver the last 'Ingersoll Lecture' in connection with, the Har \.ird University, U.S.A., and in a lather philosophical spirit he discussed tlie current attitude of Western civili sation towards immortality. He de vides people into three groups on this question. An immense majority, he says, while accepting a belief in im mortality, are practically uninfluenced by it. ' A second group, perhaps larger than ever before in history, put the supernatural out of man's life, and regard the hereafter as onty one of the many inventions he has sought out for himself ; a third group, ever small and select, lay bold with the anchor of tcii tli upon eternal life as the control ling influence in this one.' In em phasising the indifference of indivi duals to this question, he declares that ' immortality and all that, it...

Reform in Russia. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 10 January 1905

. Reform in Russia. Tun editor of 'Free Russia' (Dr. Sohkicc) writes : — ' In spite of the Cznr's opposilion nobody doubts thnt ^ '1 lie only outcome of tlie present situa tion will be a constitution mid repre sentative Government. There is still the possibility of a return to reaction ary government. This the Liberals think may be profitable in one way. The increase ?wtrfctrwill take place in the general ferment permeating the ? country will prove to the Czar how absolutely inevitable is a change of the present system. If I anticipate an attempt to return to reaction again I am certain that' the attempt will be futile. Not one of the revolutionary parties — and there are many in Russia — will agree to cease the fight against ? autocracy unless the reforms mean a democratic Parliament, and not only a constitution for the wealthy classes. The Zemstvos understand that social , peace cannot, be restored without a democratic Parliament. I have friends ainougst-the moderate Liberals, and...
