THE TftOOIg YOC&SrP ABOTTD. THUBSDAY MAY 9, IE39, THE DAILY AKOrUS JOHN W- POTTM. Thursday. Mat 9. 1889. Bona f Make It Brick. The over anxious and over zealous brick enthusiasts are circulating another petition among Second avenue' property holders with a view of presenting it to the council at its nest meeting, the purpose of which is to represent to the council that the majority of Second avenue property holders desire the council to ignore its own committee report, the expense for which the city must stand, and adopt brick. While the Arous has no objection to brick, it does not like the disposition to force it on the city, and it believes the council will best serve the public Interests by being guided in its action by the report of its own committee which may be held responsible. The brick enthusiasts visited only brick cities and then refused to report some of the defects they saw, as a citizen and an extensive Second avenue property owner who accompanied the brick...

Haa Congressman Oest and his followers forgotten McCarthy's coup d'etat at the Monmouth convention? H. C. Harris may make a fair super inlendent of streets, but so would M. H. McCarthy who secured Mr. Oest the nomination for congress in 1888. Was one term as street commissioner sufficient to pay off this debt of gratitude? Because Phil Miller wouldn't support Parson Morgan for sheriff in '86, some of the straightUced republicans are raising a bowl over hi9 appointment as city mar shal. If there is anything in particular Miller bas cause to be" proud of, it is the great assistance he rendered in electing Rock Island's best sheriff. Now if Miller makes as good a marshal as Silvia does sheriff, he will have further cause to be proud. The fact is beginning to be realized that the late administr...

NEW YORK'S DKMONSTRATION What Rork Iiltiter.Miwkt the ; teaalal f lWH9..1aterrMtlac Narrative mt larUfata, Slde-MIchta, F.te. New York City, May 2, 1889. Monday morning promised rain, but the day was fairly "clear and pleasant, a strong westerly breeze blowing as the naval procession got nnder way from Elizabethport. No accident occurred to hinder the prompt routine of disembarkation at Wall street, and then the huge ironclads steamed up the North river, the excursion steamers up the East river, whistles blowing, bunting flying and guns booming overy foot of the way. The number of flags and the quantity of decoration in New York was something unexampled and far exceeded any display of the kind I ever saw, either in April, 1875, at Bos ton; 1876, at Philadelphia, or the conclave, Knights Templars in Chicago in 1880. Ward McAllister's 400 staid away from the ball that evening, as a ...

THE TEtOOK lUUAif P AKQTTB MONDAY MAY 13. IB89 THE DAILY ATtGUS JOHN W. POTTER. Monday. Mat IS, 1889. Thekb are forty-nine counties in the northern low revenue district and in this district the federal government has issued 1,500 liquor licenses. The collector says that there is not a county in the district nor a town of 300 inhabitants in which a government license to sell liquor at retail has not been granted. The old ques tion again recurs: Does prohibition probibil? Thr experience of recent years has caused Representative Springer, of the Springfield district, to considerably modify his views in regard to the spoils sys tern. Before leaving Washington for home he said: " I feel much better than I have for a long time. I have gained fully ten pounds in weight since the fourth of March, due probably to the fact that I have had nothing to do with the great national steeple c hase for office. My supporters are not entered for that court. A great many of tbem were four years ago and ...
