WISE AND OTHERWISE . [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1906

WISE AND OTHERWISE . You cannot give life to men without giving life for them . It s a pooi kind of faith that you have to have faith in . A woman can guess right on instinct oftener than a man can on judgment . Brazil s crop of coffee this year equals fifteen-sixteenths of the world s consumption . Let the poet hitch his wagon to a star ; the really wise man anchors his airship to the earth . In Spain street performers on the guitar are licensed , while organ grinders are rigorously suppressed . It takes love and love , and love again to make a happy home . When love is in the home it doesn t matter whether you are rich or poor , or live in a palace or hovel . Love is lord over all .

Mbmeffrth • XflSSS *** // .. . * vn = T ? W i * , . < i * t $$ i ? i > ,, ! , „«* ^ at , V ^ By Mrs . Margaret Blair . By Mrs . Marflaret Blair . THE LIVING ROOM . In the living room the house makes its first acknowledgement of the social needs of the family . The housing of the kitchen range , the table from which the family are fed , and the beds upon which they sleep completes the house-builder s concern with the cruder material needs of the family . But the living room is the home and its function of providing shelter , warmth , light and comfort to the family circle makes it the most important room in the family . I recall making a similar statement about the dining room ; and I do not wish to retract in either case , for in the great majority of farm houses the clining room is the living room . Even when it is not it remains of equal importance with the living room , for it sees the daily reunions of the family in its pauses from labor or play . We shall ...

' aSeedle Work [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1906

aSeedle Work % Buc / trM /^ arqaref-Blair i THE HOUSE DRESS . We may rage against intemperance as the great enemy of the happiness of the home , but has it more to answer for than slovenly dress ? The shapeless wrapper and the drabbled petticoat , tousled hair and neck showing the dust of yesterday s sweeping—these are sins lying in wait to tempt the hard-worked housewife , and if they drive a man to nothing worse than drink , he is a pretty good man . It makes a woman s work not a whit easier to perform in unclean and ill-fitting garments—not , in fact , so easy . The trouble of making ? Yes , there is the trouble of making , but a pretty well-fitting print dress is the cheapest , as well as the most attractive , of house gowns , and it is so easily made that its place in the household economy may almost be compared to the oil that makes the wheels of the farm No . I No 2 . House Dress Shirt Waist Suit machinery run smoothly , and the making hardly a greater trouble than the oiling...

m ^ Mions ^) [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 May 1906

m ^ Mions ^) SUMMER FINERY . After the suit has been decided upon it is usually the shirt waist and summer gown which oecupy the mind of the up-to-date woman . The shirt waist is not far different from that of last year save for a lessening in the fullness of the sleeve . No blousing appears in the front of the waist and many sleeves are made short . For everyday wear , linen and madras are the prime favorites and rightly so for they are excellent for wear and tubbing . For nice afternoon wear this blouse should take on more dainty effects and be made of some sheer material such as batiste , lawn or mull and prettily inset with lace or embroidered . These little blouses of mull and lace figure largely in the feminine wardrobe and with a few of these no one need feel unprepared for any social occasion . A new feature of some of the linen waists is the chemisettes of some sheer fabric or the same material which may be removed for cleaning or left out altogether . Many of the plain blo...

P & M . we / Oofes \ 3 y I Z # W ^ g ^ t ^ g ^ g ^ t ^ t ^ g ^^ SUGGESTIONS . Do not scold nervous children . A beautiful soul and a happy heart will make any face attractive . Remember always , that the mind is the natural protector of the body . Do not feed the baby every time he cries . It may be he has an overfull stomach already , and his distress would be aggravated by an extra meal . A healthy baby will sit up of his own accord , when his spine and muscles arc strong enough . It is not best to force him before that time ., • Too much cannot be said to warn mothers not to take babies out on- the street in go-carts . , The muscles of the back are not strong enough to support the body , for any length of time , especially as the cart jolts over the tinevenness of pavements , and until children can walk without tottering , they cannot-help themselves with the foot rest . A child three years old should be very comfortable in one of them . A very easy . method of taking...
