S NEWS ITEMS. The Virginia Democratic State con vention met in Richmond on August 3lst. A straight Douglas ticket was nominated and much enthusiasm ami coufidenca prevailed, lion. John S. Williams, M. C. for the Norfolk Dis trict in a speech to-night heartily ad vocates the election of Douglas. Senator Douglas spoke in Norfolk, Virginia on the 20th he met with an enthusiastic reception. During the speech one of the BreckenrMgo elect or* nsked him would the South be justified in seceding from the Union, in case of Lincoln's election, lie an swered N lie was then asked what action he would take in case the South did secede and he answered, boldly, that should they try it, he would serve them as they had served John Brown.
