Six or seven years ago her phaeton was a familiar s:ght In Wilmington and on the roadways thereabout; she was already known among her friends as a daring rider, and there were stories abundant of heroic exploits and dangers braved in the saddle. The herse seemed to' know her: vicious ness thet was hown when others ap proahel melted into gentleness at once when she took up the reins; people who believed in the intelligenee of brute creation peilaed out this horses actions as proofof their correct faith. A STORY OF DANIEL DREW. How He Got Even with a Lot of HIs Tormentors. The blunder of a messenger boy in the stock-exchange a day or two ago, by which an order intended for one broker was given to another and the operations of a prominent speculator exposed, recalls to a New York Times writer a story that Wall street men love to tell of dead and gone Uncle Daniel Drew. Mr. Drew was squeezed one famous day by operators in Northwest stock, and he laid down a big pile of money in losses. Not unnaturally. Mr. Drew felt grieved, while other people were correspondingly high spirited and happy. It was a great thing to catch the wily deacon nappinu, and a hundred jokes went the rounds in celebration of his upsetting. Some of these bits of humor fell on Uncle Daniel's own cars, but he didn't seem to pay much heed to comments that made all the rest of Wall street laugh hilariously Some young men old enough to know better even went so far as to accost him per sonally and laugh in his face. Behi...

RURAL ECONOMY. Methods of Utilizing Various Kinds of Land Not Suitable for Ordinary Cultivation. atter Holds Its Price Better Than Any Other Product of Western FaUms. Utilizing Poor Land. On almost every farm of the extent of a quarter of a section or more there are several acres of land from which no returnjs are received. What is worse, they greatly injure the appear ance of the farm and diminish its pe cuniary value if it is offered for sale. It may be said that these waste places cost the owner of the farm nothing, as he spends neither time nor money in cultivating them. Such, however, is not the fact. They are taxed like other portions, and as a rule they are sur rounded by fenoes. They call for an annual outlay of time and money, and they afford neither pleasure nor gain. Sometimes the waste places are high, steep, and rocky, or have had the pro ductive soil removed from them by the continued washings that follow heavy rains. At other times they are low sad marshy, and have no...
