However much our political or other optiiions may be disputed, no one will be hardy enough to ques tion tbe rare prevision which has characterized the Hkkald's weath er prophecies this year. We have steadily held that the danger to the crops this season would arise not from the paucity but from the excess of the rainfall. We regret to noto that our prediction has proven only too true. The late rains leave us just on the point of disaster. Some damage to crops is already reported, and two days of a rainfall such as we had yesterday, followed by very warm weather, would count hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the pockets of our farmers. $05 glnflcto iicvall Work Laid out for the Board. The Ban Francisco A'eiva Letter, referring to the work which de volves on the Medical Board of Examiners under the amended Quackery Act, says: The new law declares that "the Board of Examiners must refuse certificates to individuals guilty of unprofessional conduct, aud if any holder of a certificate be guilty of unprofessional conduct, his certifi cate must be revoked by the Board granting it." That is emphatic and effective. The law being man datory, the Examiners oan be com pelled to do tbeir duty by manda mus. They will soon be face to face with their duty in that regard. We promise them, for a time, work enough todo. The black sheep who use the secrets of tbeir noble pro fession for vile purposes, or who for coin sell tbeir skill to procure crim inal results, must be stripped, as the law rightly contemplates, of tbe privileges which enables them to perpetrate outrage. Ifamedical rascal supplies his mistress with professional sec...

Sturgis, of the Seventh United states Cavalry, has Issued a general order from his headquarters at Fort Abraham Lin coln, Dakota Territory, by which the horse "Camanohe" lias ceu ferred upon him special honors. The order recites that the horse known as "Camanche," being the only living representative of the bloody tragedy of the Little Big Horn, June 25, 187G, his kind treat ment and comfort should be a mat ter of pride and solicitude to every member of the Seventh Cavalry, to tbe end that his life may be pro longed to the utmost limit. Wound ed aud scarred as he is, his very ex istence speaks in terms more elo quent than werds of the desperate battle against overwhelming num bers, of tho hopeless couflict and of tbe heroic manuer in which all went down on that fatal day. "Settled Questions." Every now and then some jour nal, occasionally Democratic and at other times Republican, sets itself up as intensely conservative. It deprecates discussion and is filled with horror at tbe idea of agitation. One would suppose, from the trem ulous utterances of those who con trol these organs of emasculated opinion, that something inexpres sibly terrible attaen.es to mental and moral energy, and that noth ing is'so much to be deprecated as • free discussion of the Issues of the dsy. Tbe corn in this end of the coun ty is growing very rapidly. Mr. Bassett, who lives near town, tells us his corn is as high as a man's bead. Mr. Lazard, of San Francisco, baa rented the residence of Colonel Crawford, on Ocean avenue, for three months. He and his family will take possession immediately. We can truly say of Sauta Moni ca what the patent medicine man says of his nostrum—"Everybody takes it." Our visitors are of every grade and nationality. Lords, bo nanza kings and railroad magnates come in special cars; the less pre tentions are conveyed by the reg ular passenger coacb, the steam ship or private vehicle; and even the tramps frequently "make up a load and walk" to the seaside. Nor is It bad to take. No oue "makes faces" over the dose. It is sugar* coated, so to speak. The climat...
