The curtains have fallen on 1861 forever. It has been the most eventful year in the history of this Republic, since the close of the Revolution. The Rebellion, which broke out in '60, has swept over al most the entire South, until it embraces some dozen of the States which compose this once happy and united country. In this year, great armies have been raised and sent forward against each other, all com posed of American citiz...

1 T SATURDAY, JANUARY 4. 1862. THE LEGISLATURE! This body convenes on the 14th inst. Its members are pretty much al! one way, and we apprehend there will be little delay in effecting an organization. The most imporfent'maUef ywhich will probably come before this body will be the electing of a U. S. Senator in place of Gen. Lane, who it is thought will resign. If there should be one elected," we hope he will be an un- comprbing anti-slavery man, full of patri otism, and love for the good old Union a true-blue Republican, without a rotten spot in his backbone. There must be no back-down in him. We had better have Lane's seat empty, than filled, bya time- server.' ;. ; ... .. ;' : - The next most important question is the adjournment. There is no use of the 6ea- sion lasting over' fifteen days, at most; and one of the most popular and sensible things the members can do, is to vote for a resolu tion to adjourn just as soon as possible, I if it is within five days after assembling. 9 js. SATURDAY, JANUARY 11. 1 862. . CS AGniCULTUBAI V v' ' Fowls.- No greater luxury can be had in 'winter than fresh egjjs and tender jehick ns; and yet few per&oos take any pains to hate either. Now we may as well expect tender; steak from a poor, half-frozen cow, as fresh eggs or tender chickens, if no care is taken ot the fowls. As a general thing, hens are allowed to wallow round all winter in the snowy roost in the top of some- old apple tree, and pick up a precarious means of existence where they can find it. If they do not etarye, the flesh becomes tough, hard and dry; and if they do not freeze to death, they will generally appear in the spring minus their toes, and the cocks mi nus the comb. It is useless to expect ten der chickens from fowls thus kept. While the ground is covered with snow, they can get neither gravel nor lime, with ' which to manufacture shells fur eggs, 'so thai during the winter months they are unproductive in any respect. Receipts are often given ...
