Careful comparison with the list of companies making reports and found in tho first section of this Issue of the Enterprise will show that a large proportion of these corporations eith er paid no attention to the requests for Information or could not bo found. The first oil lease on record In Jef ferson county was made In 1866 and was given by a Mr. Hillebrandt to a man by the name of Mason from Ala bama. The terras were one-tenth roy alty. In the same year Dr. B. T. Cav anaugh, an Eastern gentleman who had been prospecting for oil and coal Jn the Northwestern part of the State, and who endeavored to trace the direc tion of the oil, finally reached Sour Lake, where he found oil In greater quantities than at any point In the State. Dr. Cavanaugh said he was possessed "of Instruments which en abled him to locate two large veins passing under what Is known as "Sour Lake," which he said ran from North west to Southeast, and that two veins .crossed these at right angles. reached millions. Thousands of wild ly excited came from all over the coHntry and fabulous prices were paid for oil lands with which to or ganize oil companies. Lands which a few years ago were only worth $5 an acre and which the owners only paid $1 per acre, sold fo- 2500 per acre. The streets of the city wei e thronged witih wildly excited men who thought of nothing bus the wealth to be gained by speculation in oil lands. There was many a trag edy enacted during those times which will never be recorded and thousands of dollars lost which will never be known, except to those who were caught in that rush. When the Kelly-Kiser well, a mile distant from the hill struck a gas pocket, which seemed to assure a gusher, the speculative marines? reached its height. Money poured into the banks of this city until the bankers were sick of its gluttonous proportions. Lands miles away from the hill were sold as high as ?i00 an acre and there wasn't anything but oil land in Jefferson county. Then...
