Ike fails Appeal. {For ihff Apiiml.] MMnttla CamiponlnMc. YOUNG'S HILL, Feb. 4. 1860. EDITOR APPEAL : A line from the romantic and classical (?) town of Young's Hill, might interest you.—so like Jakey, who struck his father because he stood BO fair —I feel like plunging headlong into your pretty little sheet, just because the columns look so invitingly open : so here goes. In altitude our town is a considerable distance "up country." just high enough to catch the breezes of the Rocky Mountains, as they come rushing through the "Yuba Gap''—just such a breeze as makes a man write poetry and get fat; so Gubbins thinks. You know Gubbins—he's oneofyjur fellows—lives in Marysville. Well, Gubbins has been away up north where they dig specimens that weigh forty pounds a piece ; a dozen of which, 1 am told, will make a man a fortune. Gubbins called upon me last week, stopping, as he said, to do me a visit just out of compliment for a ''slug'' I lent him twelve months ago. Of course 1 was gla...

Jhr flailfi BSf* Scrablins lias observed that if ft hod of baked bricks is spilled upon the head of Mr. Brown or Mr. Jones, the casualty is chronicled us having befallen ••oue Brown," or "one Jones;" which is about a« comforting ns a mis-spelled name in the list of killed. It is the advice of Scrablins that the Brown and Jones families carefully shun falling bricks and such notices : that they avoid the . '-'one" by dodging the other.— Sierra Dem. fhe Jaitii Jwtal. A b AN i> OLASS LSED IN A CHCRCH. —A sand glass for marking the time having , been seen in the Established Church of a ; parish, near Perth, a gentleman residing . near Dundee sent to the clergyman rej particulars about it, and received iu reply the following account of its purposes and uses : ' Our sand glass is a reiic of antiquity. i There used to be one in every church in the oideu time. Their use was to regulate the length of the long-winded ora- [ tiou3 with which the ministers of those days were wont to favor their hearers. V> atches were not so common then as now ; and, as the sermons were not written. the preachers, when once set agoing, did not know when to stop without some seasonable monition. With a view to this, a sand glass was erected on a stand in front of the precentor's desk, so as to bo seen both by minister and people. W hen the sand ran out, the precentor, whose duty it was to attend to it, held it up in front of the mini...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 8 February 1860

RAXDAL & Co.—Have made us eternally grateful, by the bestowal offavors ATPEAL wards, during the days of our existence. We were placed under renewed obligations yesterday, by the present of a neat and handy little ivory tablet, with the name of the day of the week on each of its several leaves. CARRIAGES, WAGOXS, AC. —J. P. Hayes, carriage maker and wheel-wright, corner of Third street aud Virgin Alley, has made and is now making, some very handsome vehicles. We saw some express wagons and buggies at his shop yesterday, which will compare favorably with anybody's in that line. In fact, Mr. Hayes builds his vehicles with a view to their adaptability to the climate and roads of California, and hence, makes much more durable and serviceable work than is found in the production of Eastern manufactories. Mr. Hayes' work is a credit to himself and displays a perfectionof Marysville manufactures, of which our citizens may well be proud. A PROPER ERASURE.— It was a just and comme...
