Verdugo headed for gym title Verdugo Hills powered its way toward a Northern League Championship by crushin- Lincoln's gym team, 74-31, \ sday at Verdugo Hills. . e Dons dominated nearly all events, but the Tiger's managed four first places, two by Danny Macias and one each by Louie Moreno and Ernie Estrada. In the rope climb Joe Velarde managed the only place by scoring a tie for fourth place with a time of live and two tenths seconds. Louie Moreno and Eddie Aguilar placed first and fourth in free exercise. Gilbert Arriola was the lone Tiger to < place in the side horse by taking third place. League baseball Franklin triumphs over Eagles, 5-1 SPORTS By Pete Griffin, Franklin High Playing the best game of the season, Franklin’s Varsity baseballers downed their arch rivals, Eagle Rock, 5-1 last week. Offensively, Franklin collected nine hits and five runs. Franklin’s first tally of the afternoon came in the second inning, John Rodgers scoring on a triple by Richard Morehead. In the 'third, the Panthers Scored three runs on four straight hits by Bob Wallace, Bob Thate, Joe McCarthy, and Bob Wilson. McCarthy picked up two RBl’s and Wilson netted one. El Sereno trackfest Saturday El Sereno Recreation Center will stage its annual track and field meet this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The meet is open to all boys who wish to compete, according to Ralph Burbee. Last year Phillip Rodriguez took three firsts in the peewee division, winning the high jump with a leap of 3 ft. 4 in., 35 yd. dash in 5.6 sec., and 50 yd. dash in 8.3 sec. Ruben Gutierrez won the broad Jump with an 8 ft. 10 in. effort. Manuel Gonzales dominated the midget division, winning the high jump with a leap of 4 ft. 1 in., 35 yd. dash of 5.4 sec. and tied Armondo Pastran in the broad jump at 11 ft. 10% in. The junior division was spread out among five boys. Ray Robledo won high jump at 4 ft, 8 in., Andy Contreras took the shot put with a put of 44 ft. 5 in.. Tiger tennis team trims Verdugo, 6-1 The' Lincoln Term!* team took a sweeping victory over Verdugo Hills by taking six of the seven matches. Starting from the top, first man, Michael Crevier overwhelmed his opponent 6-1, 6-3. Second man, Armando Carmona. after losing a tough 6-8 set, completely turned the tables on his opponent on the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. Danny Meeker, third man, contrary to previous victorious afternoons lost 1-6, 1-6. Danny Ortiz, number four, fought a gruesome battle and won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Opposition heard on rubbish collection fee CCNA Considerable opposition was voiced last Monday during a city council public hearing on the proposal to impose a $1.50 per month rubbish collection fee on home-owners and dwellers in small apartment bouses. A companion proposal to turn back the clock to private rubbish pickup for apartment houses containing more than four dwelling units was ignored by the public. Those who spoke ■seemed uninformed about -it But private pickup was endorsed by a spokesman for organized private rubbish collectors. The new fee on property owners was advanced by the council committee on revenue and taxation headed by Councilman J. P. Cassidy, who said it would produce $10.9 million in new revenue annually.
