FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 18, 1850 Thr M.m«;ni» <ln«-«tlnii. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 January 1850

FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 18, 1850 The Nicaragua Question. We think it advisable under all circumstances to keep cool each man of us, nor "let slip the dogs of war" or oren ft premonitory warning of the existence of such animals, until wo are perfectly well satisfied that "war to tho knife must inovitnbly grow out of our Nicaragua difficulties; for, after all, wo find nothing very wonderful In the news which has come Up of lato from that country. Let us fully understand tho question which has assumed an importance seeming to proroko bloodshod as tin- only means of its adjustment. It has long boon excitingly known in the States as the Musquito Question—a very ominous appellation forsooth, — ono presaging long bills and bloodshed, much buzzing al>out, and on account of its dirninutivo ethcrial body and flimsy cobweb legs, not easily "circumvented." But, seriously, tho King of Musquito and the Government of Nicaragua, tiro but tho lessor fish in the fry. England has long consi...

«*W«r'« Alnrmn.'1 [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 January 1850

"War's Alarms." There iaa Holitary and piercing fife- "a shrilly fife" the poet saith — screaming the wild martial music of 'other days' within sound of our sanctum, as if the performer on thin reed was moved by no other purpose than to givo vent to belligerent feelings engendered by the rocent Nicaraguan news. It truly reminds one of the "recruiting days" of the Mexican war "When war's wild halo filled the glen," and the sound of drum and fife went the rounds of every village in the I'nited States. Too many there wero, called to view tho "magnificently stern array" of war, numbered alas! among the "unreturning bravo,'" but we do not worry ourself that such will be the sad fate of those who now dream of "The havoc of war and the bsitlc'l confunion," fichU of carnage and of well-earned huirels the fruits of the settUmcnt of our Niearaguan difficulties. It is difficult to believe that in this community, made up of enlightened minds, viewing war as a monstrous cvil — and where, too. th...

LOCAL MATTERS [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 January 1850

LOCAL MATTERS "Follow the drum." — A wagon load of various instrumental performers from Rowe & Long's Circus, drove up in the Square yesterday about noon, and delighted th citizens with a few very well executed airs. It was to attract attention of lovers of mirth to the announcement of the clown's benefit at the Olympic Circus. A few hours afterward, the drum fell into the hands of a small boy who took undisputed possession of the entire inside of the wagon, and such a severe beating in the urchin gave that drum we only wished some kind friend would administer him with one half the vigor. "What Paddy gave the drum" was not a touch to it." Public Administrator.— We learn that the Hon. A. B. Almond, has appointed W. M. Hoffman, Esq., Public Administrator for the District of San Francisco. Police Court — We believe there is no place in the world, with the same amount of population, where crime exists less than in San Francisco, at the present time Since our last but three a...

FROM THE SACRAMENTO — THE OVERFLOW [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 18 January 1850

FROM THE SACRAMENTO — THE OVERFLOW The Senator came down yesterday from the scene of the flood, and we have the cheering intelligence that the waters are rapidly falling. Our correspondence from the inundated city is very complete, and we regret the lateness of the hour at which we received the same, and which precludes the possibility of publishing at this time. The city authorities were actively engaged in relieving the distressed. At four o'clock on Wednesday afternoon the highest lands of the city were entirely free from water. Lumber was sold at $220 a 225 per M. Numerous thefts had been committed, and several thieves were detected in their sly operations. We extract from the Placer Times extra : The absurd story that many have been left in hospitals and have there drowned, scarcely needs contradiction The sick we are assured, have all been comfortably provided for. Those in the Sacramento Hospital, near Sutler's Fort, were taken into the Fort, around which there have been seve...
