A Pardonable Pride City of Whitewright The Waco Ex nmincr mourns over the decadencc of orthodox Christian- ity and the spread of infidelity among the masses, and attributes it to the secular press which "disseminates the teachings ot quasi infidelity daily and hourly all through the land." The Examiner says "people wont go to church and the church wont go to the peoplein other words the peo- ple prefer to rend to setting in a house of worship and listen to oral instruction. The inference of the Examiner is that the church neglects to employ the press as a means of proselyting, but this inference is fa- lacious, The various sects of Chris- tianity publish as many papers as the people will support, and, as a rule,- the prices of subscription arc below those charged for secular papers. _ DENISON, THURSDAY APRIL x8, 187P. The trial of Suleiman Pashu has commenced. Condemnation is re- garded as extremely piobable. The Waco Examiner says to cor- respondents, "i'lease write short and plain"—a kind of legible shorthand, we suppose, is what is wanted. On July ist, the annual interest of the first mortgage bonds of the Hous- ton and Texas Central road will fall due, and the Telegram leai'ns they will be promptly paid. Mr. Mills has written a letter to Capt. Torbett, of Waco, in which he says the bill to pension the soldiers of the Mexican war will pass the House, but it is uncertain in the Sen- ate. The State convention meets at Austin on the 17th of July. The County Executive Committee should not delay the call for primaries, and a county convention to select dele- gates. Mr. Uvalde Burns, for a short time postmaster of Sherman, was ad- mitted to the bar as an attorney and councellor at law, in Galveston on the 15th inst. A penalty not to exceed one hundred dollars is fixed for such offense. B. Killebrew, the Tennessee Commission- er of Agriculture. According to a careful estimate pre- pared for this report, tobacco is more generally used than any other single ar- ticle of commerce consumed by man.
