However before you pitch all of your copies into the round file take note: The Brand is sponsoring a contest. All you have to do is refer to "The Bland doesn't give a quack" on page 2. If you can figure out the names of the students who gave the quotes (except for Mallard Drake) you will have a chance at two free movie passes from Park Central Six. Editorial Staff member says thanks by Rick Hope How am I facing graduation? With both excitement and fear. I do know one thing though there have been many things I have picked up here at HSU that will help insure me some success in my future endeavors. Not only through the immense education I have received but also through the friendships. It was Bobby Alvarez Mike Milstead and Paul Ahner who made my first year here easier to handle. Mike Thibodeaux my roommate this year has taught me a lot through his witness and friendship. Thanks to Jonathan Woody for always 1149KUocUngbM I754Z7Z 111 N. Student letter First of all we want it to be known that this letter is not meant to put the football team down in any way whatsoever. We have nothing against football players or the program here at HSU. Recently the soccer team has been kicked off of the soccer field; we can no longer practice there because the football team does. Since football has come to HSU it seems as though all sports have taken a seat on the back burner. We feel that all sports should be treated equally. Not only does the football team need a place to practice but all other sports should have facilities available for practice purposes. We don't blame this problem on the football team but rather the athletic directors. All we ask for is a place to practice. We don't feel that this request is too much to ask for. Vol. 78. No. 24. April 17. 1991 Student Voice of Hardin-Simmons Anviron Incorporated leads way to saving environment by Gina Garner Many people often ask what a place of higher education like Hardin-Simmons University is doing to help save the environment and also to educate people. A private corporation in its infancy Anviron Incorporated is leading the way with the answer to this question by simple environment testing. Anviron Incorporated began its fight to help save our environment during January 1991. Housed in the laboratories of the Sid Richardson Science Building Anviron is an analytical lab National Resources Much of the time the typical university student is unaware of what goes on around them other than classes work clubs and social events. Often people will stand up and call on their school to look at the issues facing society today without ever realizing that the school is doing just that. Such is the case with one organi- zation on the campus of Hardin-Simmons Universi...

Non-Traditional Student Must religion be grim? by John Carroll Have you ever noticed how everyone has a course they delay taking until they are just forced to? The course I am putting off is Bible. I almost took it this semester. I told my advisor I would like to have someone like my Sunday School teacher a nice older lady for an instructor. My logic was that I didn't have trouble staying awake in Sunday School and I never had a Sun- day School teacher scare the "Heir out of me by talking about eternal damnation. I was advised that all of the Bible teachers were men so I asked for the biggest sinner of the bunch. My advisor said it would not be proper for an ad- visor to sit in judgement of a fellow instructor. I said I wasn't asking for a judgement call I was just wanting someone I could relate to. Of course I have to admit that my logic was flawed from the start. Even a freshman knows that if TYPING: Term papers $1.25 per page. Same day service. Call Connie 673-5806 Leigh Ann Whid...

I Student Letter Do you have a complaint about anything here on cam- pus? I know I did. i had a complaint earlier this semester that I voiced and I learned an extremely valuable lesson from it. Yes I learned humility but more so I learned how passive some of the students on this campus are. When I wrote my letter to the editor back in January I discovered that I was not the only person who had a grievance against the spiritual environment on cam- pus. I pointed my finger in the wrong direction but I did hit the nail dead on the head. But things have not changed on campus as far as I can see. My life has changed im- mensely since the beginning of the semester. I have had my (See Letter page 4) Database Revival... Student Letter (cont'd from page 3) call to the ministry reconfirmed while facing extreme adversity these past three and one-half months. I took the advice of my brothers and sisters in Christ and quit using Abilene and Hardin-Simmons to boost my spiritual life and started turning to Jesus. In turn I have attempted to share this with others on campus and off. I say all this not to glorify myself but rather to say this: How has Jesus affected your environment? There are hundreds of students on this campus who are hurting so desperately. And believe it or not they are not the ones who are creating the poor spiritual environment. The environment is created by you and I who as Christians should let our light shine but do not. Jesus is the creator. New lives are created when we allow Jesus to create through us. This in turn effects the world around us. So the next time you have a problem with the spiritual environment on campus like I did remember the answer lies within. Jesus is the lig...

"Doc" Beazley retired from his position as executive vice president of HSU in 1981 but continues to represent HSU through his work with the Six White Hor- ses. "You can go to any big city today and you can find people who have heard of the Cowboy Band and the Six White Hor- ses" said Beazley who now serves as vice president emeri tus. "The Cowboy Band has brought more fame to Hardin- Simmons University than any other organization. The Wes- tern heritage influence is ter- ribly important to this school." The Six White Horses were originally introduce in the 1930's as a promotional gim- mick for the internationally famous Cowboy Band. The band and the horses still attract attention. Editor looks toward graduation and remembers mentor by Leigh Ann Whiddon It is hard to imagine that I am actually graduating from col- lege. When I stepped foot on a college campus for the very first time on January 24 1 987 I never really imagined that I would actually graduate. When people come to the end of a special time in their life they often say that they are closing a chapter. Right now I feel like I have not only finished the chapter and the book but the entire reading list. It is time to dust off the library-of-life card and find a new reading list (right now it's looking like mystery books). I thought real hard about what to write in my very last column without it sounding Noises on the page Brand staff finishes year by Leigh Ann Whiddon It is hard to believe that another year is nearly finished. Seniors are anxiously awaiting graduation and freshmen are rejoicing that they made it through without being ponded and are wondering how they are going to make it through the n...

Football Has Arrived (original run: Sept. 19) by Carey Alderson Baseball basketball and soccer have been the main athletic events at HSU for the past fifteen years. Now returns HSU Cowboy Football not seen at HSU since 1963. It is now a part of the school's curriculum. Many people are asking why. Dr. Merlin Morrow director of athletics said the reason for the return of football is "for more fall activities and to increase the male population." Zane Poe a freshman foot- ball player said "We feel that as a team we can only go for- ward whether we win or lose. I think we have to prove our- selves to HSU. "We have the talent and determination to be champions it's going to take a lot of physical and mental work but we are all willing to make the sacrifice." The Brand Asks What do you think should be done about those who shoe polish the campus? "I think if they shoe polish the campus they should be pre- pared to clean it up especially the buildings." Allison Little. "I think they should b...

HSU cafeteria visited (Original run: Jan. 25) by John Carroll After having to eat cafeteria food for 12 years while in public schools I gave no thought to eating in the HSU cafeteria when I started school here. After all I had a car and Taco Bell was just across the street. I have always felt that if Taco Bell were not the best place to eat they were ahead of whoever was in second place. As the fall semester approached an end I made a terrible discovery: you can get your fill of Taco Bell if you eat there enough. Upon making this discovery I decided to eat in the HSU cafeteria and have decided to describe my experience in case there are those who have not experienced the gastronomical delight of eating here on campus. When you first enter the cafeteria most students give their ID cards and the cashier scans a bar code on the back of the cards. They call this procedure "charging points." If you do not have a bar code on the back of your ID they will accept cash. The problem with cash...

1 Chivalry is Needed (Original run: Oct. 10) by Sharla Tenburg and Becky Highfilll (also known as Merry Andrews) Concerning The Brand's ar- ticle "Football Has Arrived" (Sept. 19) I wish to express on behalf of the women of HSU our jubilation at Dr. Morrow's commitment to "in- crease the male population" through football's rein- statement. However what HSU really needs is more men not merely more males. The metamorphosis is simple to perform; simply teach these newcomers the art of courtesy and respect. Special training would transform these "hulks" into "gentle giants." In short HSU needs to see the return of chivalry. I propose the installation of a Department of Chivalry headed by Dr. B.W. Aston (due to his extraordinary expertise in the field). This department would provide undergraduate male students the opportunity to stu- dy the manifold theories and styles of chivalry and offer them opportunities to exper- ience the artistic skills of this discipline. A Chivalry Proficiency ...

An example of "success" (Original Run: Oct. 31) by Richard Ruane Well its homecomeing week time for Sing football and parents. It's also time for that group of people who we all wish to be one of some day: the alumni. This school has a lot of alumni who we should all really appreciate. They endow scho- larships build buildings and help graduates find jobs. With- out so many of our alumni our school probably wouldn't be here. But (I know there's always a but) somewhere a- mong the buildings endow- ments and succesful alumni clubs I think we forget some- thing. I'm not sure I can define it in so many words instead I want to tell you a story and show you. It's a true story of two HSU graduates from the 1 970's they married after they graduated and now he's run- ning a small tree-trimming and extermination business out of his home here in Abilene. She sews cooks caters quilts and does arts and crafts. They moved back to Abilene in the early 80's and joined First Baptist. Shortly thereaf...
