Northern Miner. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1875. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 6 October 1875

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER C, 1875. THE verdicts of juries arc generally a reflex of the standard of morality and of the sense of justioe prevailing in a com inanity. Where a wide-spread sympathy with crime of any description obtains especially in a small community-juries seldom rise above its influence, seldom bring fauna to their minds and consciences the tact that they are elevated by their position to the solemn responsibilities of representatives of justice, and that in the discharge of their duties they should put aside, as far as possible, all local interests and influences, .onsiderations of mercy for individuals as known by them, and judge only of their guilt < r innooenoo by the rules of strict evidence, Since the opening of the Di-triot Court sittings here the verdicts of juries have been marked by a justness and impartiality in favorable contrast with other portions of this colony, and on more than one occasion Judge Hint has deservedly complimented the juries who ^ca...

ADELAIDE. October 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Northern Miner — 6 October 1875

ADELAIDE. October 4. The Surveyor-General reports six millions of   acres under cultivation. Gold has been discovered in the north-eastern district. The "Magnet Troupe" opened on Monday   night in the Oddfellows' Hall to a crowded house. The entertainment was a great success, and no doubt the Troupe will continue to draw large audiences. The Company opens to-night at Cooper's Prince of Wales' Theatre. A mid-day performance will be given on Saturday, at 2 o'clock. We observe that Mr. Davison has opened a produce store at the lower end of the main street. We think there is a good opening for this business, and that Mr. Davison, who is an old resident here, and well-known and respected, will make a bit at it. We should like to see some genuine attempts at agriculture in the dis- trict. The soil in many places will grow or- dinary crops; but the seasons must be studied,   and a few failures must be expected. There is a large demand here for horse f...
