BERRYBANK. The concert, social and dance held here last Wednesday even ing, in aidof the Belgian Relief Fund, was a great success. The attendance was the largest at anything ever held here, about 350 people being present. £24 raited by- the sale of tickets, JE46 by auction sales, £30 given In deferred payments, and about 100 acres of next year's crop, delivered free on trucks, was promised. This should bring in at least another £200. This spirit shown by the Berrybank farmers is highly commended, and could be emulated by other farmers in the State. Dr Brown, of Colac, gave an address about Belgium, and was given a great reception. Mr Stretch moved a vote of thanks, which was car ried by acclamation, to all those who had in any way worked to make the meeting a success. Messrs Onians and Co. 's grain shed made an excellent hall. Mr Mack was chairman and auction eer. The local press supplied all the printing and advertising free. The concert followed, and was contributed to by Ballarat...

However, it is this year's income which so many of those on the land lost, and which they cannot spend, As one re sult of enforced economy, the Customs revenue for March shows a falling off of about £150,000, as compared with the return for the corresponding month of last year. Nor is there the slightest reason to suppose 1 that the months immediately ahead will show any marked im provement; indeed, it is quite possible that they may show a further decrease. Even if thii were all, the Commonwealth Treasurer might well pause be fore raising duties which bring in large sums to a height at which they will be practically prohibitive and unproductive. We regret to have to chronicle the death of Mr R. Pook, which occurred at the Creasy private hospital late last Thursday night. A month ago the unfortunate man sustained severe internal injuries through being crushed between two trucks at the Wer neth railway station. His re mains were conveyed by tram on Friday to Brighton, for inter ment. The Methodist church has ar ranged its anniversary for the 25th inst., when special services will be held at 3 and 7.30 p.m-, fDllowed by a tea and public meeting on the 26th. Something very special in the musical line may be looked for. Mr W. J.
