THE WOOL QUESTION. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 September 1876

THE WOOL QUESTION. As the shearing season has now fairly set in, the attention of woolgrowers is naturally attracted to anything having referenco to the chief product of our colonies, the more especially as the home market is but languidly recovering from its recent depression. Tho following article from the Burrangong Argus, holding out the prospect of another market being found besides that of Europe, is . well worthy of perusual by those more directly interested in the subject . — ' A mootable subject, of much interest to our woolgrowers, and indeed to the colony at large, has been broached in the journals of this colony and those of Victoria. The very considerable decline in the price of wool that has lately taken place has caused great anxiety amongst the class it will more immediately affect ; and as the prospects of much improvement in rates, at all events for some time to come, are anything but encouraging, the present and the future aro alike ombai'rassing, both to individu...

LECTURE. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 September 1876

LECTLRE. The usual quarterly lecture was delivered in the Church of England, Grenfell, last Monday evening, by the incumbent, the Rev. F. S. Wilson. The subject chosen was 'The Melanesian Martyrs,' being a history of the Melanesian mission, and sketches of the lives of Bishop Patteson and Commodore Goodenough. The church was well filled with an attentive and appreciative audience. The church arch was decorated with a largo crimson banner, bearing in conspicuous white letters tho passage from Isa. xiii,, 12, ' Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare his praise in the islands.' The various groups of islands comprising Melanesia wore delineated on an immense diagram, which was repeatedly referred to by the lecturer. Portraits of Bishop Patteson and Commodore Goodenough were also displayed, and an eTcellent 'photographic view of the monument recently erected over tho remains of the latter, in the cemetery of St. Leonards, near Sydney. After tho missionary hymn, 'Lift the banners,...

MUNICIPALITY FOR GRENFELL. [Newspaper Article] — The Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser — 30 September 1876

MUNICIPALITY FOR GRENFELL. Our townspeople appear determined, once having initiated a policy of progress, to keep the ball rolling, and some of them have, as will be seen by our advertising columns, requisitioned R. M. Vaughn, Esq., to call a public meeting, to take into consideration the advisability of having a Municipality created in Grenfell. In compliance witli that request, a meeting has been convened for Tuesday evening next, which will be held in the read ing-room of the School of Arts, and doubtless be largely attended. The question was mooted some months back, but no active steps weie, we l egret to say, taken in the matter ; but now that a beginning lias been made, we hope to see the affair carried through successfully. Of course, there is every probability of the desired incorpora tion being opposed, and that warmly, yet we believe the petitioners will effect their object, and soon have a District Municipality created in Grenfell. Many will oppose it' on the ' penny-wise...

latest English lews. [PBOU THE HKKALD'B TELEGRAMS] THE EASTERN QUESTION. ? London, September 14. The Porte has refused to grant an armistice to the insurgents, but will consider the pro posals of peace submitted by the other Powers. The Earl of Hartington, when addressing the assemblage at the Cutlers' feast, advocated that Parliament should be at once convoked to consider what should be the future policy of England in regard to Turkey. At an indignation meeting, held in refer ence to the alleged atrocities in Bulgaria and other places, Mr. Gladstone said that there would be a hearty co-operation between England and Russia to endeavour to settle the Eastern question. An address to the Queen was carried, urging the. Government of England, in concert with tho other great Powers, to exclude Turkish rule in the dis affected and insurgent provinces. ? Earl 'Derby defended the Government against the charges of supineness in not pro testing against the alleged atrocities, and also that the...
