t ? 1 1 (Contributed.-) { ? Two Sides to a Question. I [Scene : iThe verandah of the Commercial iHotel.l i ? The word}- [war waxed fierce and loud, i When LWmore Dan threw down his pajper And growled, ' I'm blest if Nam bour trowd Ain't kicking up a fine old caper. Say, Mat, jjou've read and travelled much. Now plainly state your own con victipns ; To me it all seems double Dutch, This hoijse-dray work and shire elect-ions.' Mat turned from the noisy Dan, And mused a moment contem plative ; Then paused to light his own dudeen, And nodded to the Sydney native. 'Well. OUR ESSAY. SCANDAL. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

OUR ESSAY. SCANDAL. {By Seccsdcs.; We know of nothing that can more easily stir up strife, breed contentions, cause heartburnings, and make unhappy divisions in a communitv than scandal. It is one of the common faults of mankind, ! and to many people there is nothing more fascinating or deceiving. It is as prevalent in the business shop as in the sitting-room, and often more deadly. It prevails among all classes — high and low, rich and poor, learned and unlearned — mak- ing mischief, spreading dissension, and causing enmity, amongst the friendly and charitably disposed. The vestibules of our churches, the favourite resorts of the gossip, and the uncanopied table of thelabourer, if they had. ears and could repeat what thev heard, would have a sad tale to tell. But somehow, and perhaps mys teriously so, many of these strange conjectures and suspicious struc tures find an outlet, and pass from the lips of the author and can never be recovered. Remember that words, like birds, have win...

Comments on Queensland. PETULANCE AND JEALOUSY. [Newspaper Article] — Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 18 September 1903

Corn merits on ! Queensland. by Victorians. PETUtAXCE AND JEALOUSV. ' Unfedeijal' is the term applied bj' Mr. Tpveruer, Minister for Lands, to the action of the Queens land authorities in distributing priuted matter advertising the lands of that Stste at the Agricultural! Show. ; ' I» could understand the Federal G avermnent sending an j Australian Exhibit round the princi pal shows ojf the various States,' re marked Mrj Taverner, ' but I think this act on Hie part of Queensland is a little unfair, and decidedly un federal.' j Some amused public comment was created by the action of the Queensland agricultural authorities in sending their exhibit to the Royal Show last week with the object 6f advertising the lands of that State for settlements and steal ing away from Victoria part of her population-!— taking advantage, in' fact, of the public outcry against the long standing supineness and neglect; of our own Lands Depart ment. ; Naturally this poaching is not relished by the Victori...

Sport and Pastime. CRICKET CHATTER. (BV LONGSTOP.! After an absence of a few ?\veeks, rendered necessary by the inrush of other copy, the editor tells me I have again to make my bow. Much has been done % the various clubs in the interval, part of which I hope to deal with before closing this week's letter. The question of forming an association still hangs fire. So far I have only received the names of Messrs. J.| Bendixon and W. Jones, as delegates for the Montville Club. What are you doing, Eumundi, Yahoo Creek, Bli Bli, Buderum, Woombye, Nambour, and Landsborough ? Wake up ere the season has flown. Much no doubt will be said at the festive board later on by both the 'Burr and 'Bourian Clubs, so that a meeting wiR, in all probability, be called fora fortnight hence. i * . * # Word comes to me this week, that our cricketing friends at Yahoo Creek are desirous of meeting the Nam bour Club on either wicket. Right you are, cricketers, Nam bour will set aside a day in the vety near fut...
