VICTORIAN MINING RETURNS. Tho - official reports and .statistics for the quarter ended 31st December last have been published. Tho gold yield of tho colony for the period . is ', sot down at 152,816 oz., being an increase of 3565 oz. as compared with that of tho previous quarter. From quartz mining 102,820 oz. wero obtained, and 49,996 oz. from alluvial.' Tho Ballarat distriot takes the fore most place, with a return of 54,762 oz.; Sandhurst comes next, with 30,929 oz., Castlemaine taking credit for 17,256 oz.; Maryborough, for 16,880 oz.; Beooh worth, for 16,877 oz.; Gippsland, for 10,068 oz.; and Ararat for 6040 oz. As to the quantities of quartz crushed, tho figures must bo taken just for what thoy aro worth, and it is well known that tho system on whioh they are collated is very imporfeot.
