The Synagogue Overdraft. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE HEBREW STANDARD.) [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

The Synagogue Overdraft. (To the Editor of The Hebrew Standard.) Sir, — I was much surprised at seeing among my friend's correspondence, a circular drawing attention to the overdraft. There seems to be a peculiar mode of procedure in this connection, because, being a sub scriber to the Great Synagogue, it seems that I have been overlooked in the plan of the circulation. I should like to ask who is responsible for the distribution of these circulars, because these persons may be told that to their fault may be reckoned the loss of my subscription of 10s 6d, and those of a few Ot my friends who have also been neglected' But this is just characteristic of the average dealing of the Great Synagogue officials. — Yours, etc., SUBSCRIBER.

Rev. I. Epstein. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 15 October 1897

Rev. I. Epstein. When death came to Rev. Dr. Isaac Epstein on Thursday morning of last week at 9 o'clock, it removed one of the most lovable and bene- ficial characters that ever came prominent before the St. Louis public. Not only did it bring sorrow to his immediate family, but all over the city whole families of the poor and needy, who knew the Rabbi by his deeds of philanthrophy, mourned his demise. Death came while Mr. Epstein slept peacefully in the beautiful home he had built at 2213 Locust Street, and while he was surrounded by every member of his family, including two generations, except his oldest son, Marcus, who was hurrying to St. Louis from Chicago. Two years ago Dr. Epstein was injured in a runaway at Fourty-third Street and Laclede   avenue. He suffered intensely, but was able to take a daily ride about the city in his carriage, a form of recreation he greatly enjoyed. In July of the present year he was overcome by the heat, and since that time has daily...

(* n« - - .... .-£ I « ??I There is no art, no science that has not been approached by many wearying steps ; the poet, who is said to be born, not made, but hercaas oi the facility of versification, to master in some way, however roughly, those canons of his Muse that must not be contravened by any who I pretend to have her inspiration ; the painter I has a hundred technicalities of his vocation to I conquer before he dare attempt to express the I slightest creations of his mind; while, as to I science, we know that every student bases hia j teaching upon the learning of others, and only I hopes to go beyond, or even to qualify, what they have revealed. The calling of an actor exacts no less from the votaries of the stage than does any other profession from its students. It may appear to offer facilities to people who do not mind displaying crude talents and in- j efficient capacity ; but, for those who aspire to be really and honourably what they call them selves, there is no art t...

MASSAGE AND ELECTRICITY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 22 October 1897

MASSAGE AND ELECTRICITY. - It is extremely interesting, but in no way a^onishing1, that the treatment of certain conditions of disease by . massage and electricity should have become so popular in Europe and America within so short a period. Our continental friends are to be credited with having first made the attempt to systematize ' movement cure?,'' but it cannot be said at the present time that their knowledge in reference to this subject is in any way superior to our own. In Germany the treatment'ot chronic diseases hy massage is extremely valued amongst both physicians and surgeons of kh.owa eminence, and with the people it is exceedingly popular. In our own country and in our midst it is gradually and surely making way, and in due course there can be no doubt that it will create and maintain a position as a curative agent of the very highest value. We draw the attention of our readers to the advertise ment of Mr Saltiel D. Nathan in connection with the above.
