THE APPROACHING WANGARATTA BOROUGH ELECTION. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 12 July 1872

TIEE APPROAOHING WANGARATTA BOP.OUGH ELECTION. The time is now approaching for our municipal and shire elections, and. it behoves every burgess to into. rest himself in placing good and worthy men at our various Council tables. The rising importance of Wangaratta demands our more particular allusion to this matter. For along time we hare suffered our. solves to be looked down upon by our more fortunate brother-township on the hill, and oven this fact can be traced to the lethargy shown by the old residents of this town. But now we are rising from the cloud of apathy which encircled ourpredecessosn, and, in spite of the many advantages so liberally lavished upon our elevated friend, by orvernment instilalions, &o, it will soon be soon that Wangaratta will not play second fiddle to any town in the North.uteoron division. Witll this object at heart, is it not above all things desirablo that we as burgesses should attend strictly to our lante raslsa nd see that we return men as ...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NORTH-EASTERN ENSIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The North Eastern Ensign — 12 July 1872

TO THE EDITOR OF TILE NORTH EASTERN ENSIGN. Sir,-Having resigned my seat in the Benalla Shire Council, I think some explanation of the stop is duo to the ratepayers of the riding which I had the honour to represent. Aod while thanking them for the generous support hitherto accorded me, I must stato that so long as the Council consists of a majority of membera resi dent in the town of Bonalln it is useless for the country districts to be represented by a minority; the object of that majority being to advance their own interest in beautifying the town to the detriment of the country districts. I would, as a nratpayer,, s u est~that' the moneys collected in or near the' townshij hlsould be (if necessary) expended on the ornamenting ,and improving the town; bhut lam decidedly of opinion that the moneys collected in the country districts should not boe o :x. pended, but should he spent in tho neighbotirhood in which they are collooted. This measure has been re-o peatedly urged in the Cou...
