THE CAMORRA. A TERRIBLE SECRET SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 August 1908

THE CAMORRA. ;A TERRIBLE SE+CET SOCIETY. --1i . There is no country in Europe where the conditions of life-for the mass of people--have improved so much during the last few years thani in Italy, and yet Italy is the one country in Eurauc where the secret society remains a scourge of th' populace. And of al the Italian secret societies the CaRnorra is the most dreaded, for its tenticles reach all over the world and are directed not only against individuals but against combinations. llackmail and murder are the favourite weap ons of the society. During the last elections an at tempt was made by one merchant of Naples to defy the Camorra. The main council of the Camorra met, considered the case of the recalcit rant merchant, anti, without west. ing much time on the matter, son tenced him to death for his dis obedience, and detailed six men to see that the sentence of death was carried out. Meanwhile the threatened mer chant had organised a little pri vate Camorra of his own, and one of...

Alexandra P. and A. Society. On Tuesday night ]nst, Mr. W. J. Hlowever. judging from the asnll attendance, the u'orts of the society were not appreciated, and it was not only disheartening to the society, but disgust inti. The society was trging to get out of the old groove, and give what ass.ist ance it could to the farmers by inviting Government exlerts to the district and lecture oun different subjects. LAST SATURDAY'S GAME. Alexandra v. Johnson's Creek. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 August 1908

LAST SATURDAY'S GAME. BY ONLOOKER. Alexandra v. Johnson's Creek. The above teams met on thd show ground last Saturday afternoon, and as a good game and a close finish was expected. a large crowd of people 'iers present. They were not disappointed, as the plaky was fast and even from start to finish, and when the final bell rang there was only' a' diferenceo of two points. The weather was Perfect for football, with a nice warm sun, there being no breez, whatever. With all these advantages the scoring was excep tionally low, which showed the determined way in which both teams defended their goals. 'The first quarter was evenly con tested, but the football was not up to the usual standard. Three minor points were scored in this quarter, two to Alexandra and one to Johnson's Creek; the former team playing better football. In the second quarter, the Creek imuroved; and added three minor points and a goal, the latter being kicked by Bert Johnson, but Alexandra failed to score, although th...

Anglican Church Embroglio [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 August 1908

Anglican Church Embrogliu Since the commencement of this trouble in Alexandra in September last, we have tried to maintain what we deemed a judicious impartiality in the interest of the church and in the hope that such counsels would have prevailed as would have saved the honor of the church and all coa cerned. The action of the authorities, however, makes us feel that no matter what we say, or divulge, can place the church in a worse position than it has been placed by those whose solemn duty it was to con serve the honor and preserve the peace of the church. It will be remembered we commented adversely on the IRo. Scott's action in closing the church against th'o people. Subsequent events have proved that Mr. Scott took the only course that he could prudently and legally have taken, and that the authorities could just as easily have adopted the course at lirst that they took subsequently. That there was no need for the people to have been kept out of their church for so many month...

White filling the position recently occupied by Mr. R. A. Ellis. Several gentlemen were ap. preached with a view of making an elec. tion. but the bait was not looked upon as a delicate morsel. Mr R. E. Edwards. re. thrming officer, declared Messrs Angol, W. Baker, F. Wheeler, E. White and Rev Mr Scott duly elected. The New Milkine Machine :-Dairymen qualilied to judge adlmit the 1908 L-K-G is a great success. It's just the machine farmers have been waiting for as it overcomes all objections. It puts an end to all complaints about cost of up.keep and reduces the driving power and foul consumption enor. moualy. There's no such thing as cows holding back their milk. and the milk period is fully sustained. Departure of Mr. W. Payne. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 August 1908

Departure of Mr. W. Payne. -49-- A farewell social and presentation was tendered to Mr Willuam Payne and ( family, of Gobur, on Friday last, in the Yarek public hall, by their many friends, I prior to their departure for Queensland. Mir Payne has resided in the district for over 25 years, and during that time has I done a coisiderable amount of good both for the district and his neighbors. Mr. :Payne always kept to the old farmer's system of assisting one another by giving a day now and again in ploughing his neighbor's land and other such little assistance, which all tend to assist, materially, a farmer who happens to be ; backward with his crops through no fault of his own. This kindly assistance has carried many a struggling farmer through the season. If a little more of this kind of friendly aid was given uinny of the less fortunate farmers would be in I a better position to-day. Mr Payne has disposed of his property at Gobur. and has taken up land in Queensland, where it is to ...
