PROPOSED GARDEN IMPROVEMENTS. To the Editor. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, Portarlington & Sorrento Advertiser — 26 September 1885

PROPOSED 'GARDEN IMPROVE .i"MENTS. To the Editor. Sir,-I am sure the motion tabled by Or Cottier atethe last meeting of the Borough Cgunciil, will give great satis faction to a"'considerable.number of our townspeopleiz., the opening up of the Gardens b y'ýan avenue leading froi Learmonth'istriet. This dead wall of trees facing you going out fromu Lear month street, has been an eye sore, spoken of by strangers and others for many a day. An avenue opening direct through sea wards, would not only give a view, brt would allow the summer evening's cool ing breeze to pass along that quarter df the town, giving a healthful luxury to many. A petition should be got up to strengthen the hands of Mr Cottler in this matter, Yours etc., PROGRESS.

The Sentinel. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 1885. [Newspaper Article] — Queenscliff Sentinel, Drysdale, Portarlington & Sorrento Advertiser — 3 October 1885

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 1885. From facts stated in a recent article published in The Journalist we are in duced to believe that thenenwspapers pay ing the largest profit aree several of ithe journals located in Paris.: A- -notable instance of this is seen iin nthe Petit Journal. Foi some time past the head of that concern, who formerly was a work man at three francs a day, has made an average of 400,000 profit a. year. It is claimed that the Petit Journal, sold for one cent, has a circulation of 800,000 copies a day. The proper method of gauging the value of an. advertisement is by the circulation of the paper in which it appears. The French journals appear to appreciate this fact and to fix their rates accordingly. Thirty to forty cents per line is looked upon as a high rate for advertising in our leading dailies. The price charged, per line, by the Petit Journal for advertisements is six dollars, and for reading matter twelve dollars per line. The regular rate for advertising in the F...
