Panther Shooting in India. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 3 February 1899

Panther Shooting in India, Of ail forms of sport in India, sitting up at night for panthers over ft bait is about tho moat utterly wearisome and tho most unproductive ; and yet at stations near to which panthers are to bo found, nearly evory sportsman has tried it tnoro or lens often-generally without over having seen, much loss bagged, a panther. Tho method adopted in this form of Bport is very simple. Tho sportsman sits up in a troo, on a native bedstead genorally, whilo under, ncuth tho treo is totlioml a kid, which is Bupposed to bleat loudly, and so attract any panthor which may bo in tho neighbourhood within olose rango of the sportsman ubovo hitn, Of course, a moonlight night should be chosen ; but this IH not a line qua »ion, as a lantern with tho glass covered with white tissue papor, hung in u troo over tho kid, makoti a very fair sub stitute for n moon, especially if tho ground round tho kid in covered with chaff (whioh is proourablo at every village), aa this makeB the p...

A CLIP OF WOOL. FROM SHEARING SHED TO SHIP. VIII. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 3 February 1899

A GUP OF WOOL FROM SHEARING SHED TO SHIP. i V 11 I. "Referring to the subject of hairs bring topped up with wool showing better characteristics or lighter condition than the contents lower down, it. should always he remembered that ilirrr is no rule existing by which show hairs mit</ bo opened at the top. Any or every broker may be required by the buyers to J stand every second bale, or indeed every I bale on its top, and open the bottom end, , in which east; the object of the over-cute , grower would be defeated, and the worst, j instead of the best, of each hale be j shown, lu justice, to the wool growers; of the colony, and, indeed, to nil who sell : their wool in this market, it must be .stated that this practice has not, hern by j any means common in the past, and there ; have been more instances of it this, season than ever before, so it is just as ^ wall, whilst the. abuse is in its infancy, to put it down by showing how it may so ; easily work to the disadvantage ...

An Automatic Milk Scale. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 3 February 1899

An Automatic Milk Scale, Few farmers tako the trouble carefully to weigh and accurately note the quantity of milk yiolded by the difleront cows in their herd, or to tost the quality. A farmer who is keeping a dairy herd for profit, and making butter, wants to know tho quantity of butter, ns noar aa it can bo averaged, that each cow is yiolding. To accomplish this, tho milk must be weighed at. Btat.ed poriodn during tho time of lactation, in order that tho avorage yield may bo arrived tvb ; and tho milk at the same time tested for quality. This can bo chocked^ up with the total amount of butter inarkoted, and in this way a man can know whother a cow simply pays hor way, whethor she is n profitoonfcumer, or is yiolding a quantity that warrants the farmer in feeding hor. . If moro caro wuro givon to this subject, thoro would bo fewor complaints of farms yiolding poor returns. Carriage of Live Stock. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 3 February 1899

Carriage of Live Stock, The feeding and watering of stock when trnveiling long distances has always been a subject which lias exercised (lie minds not. only of humane people, but also of owners and ilio railway authorities. The great trouble is that the animals which conic such long distances are too wild and shy to take any substancoa either in the shape of food or drink under such (to them) unusual conditions as "rifling in a railroad car.'' Public attention lias recently been directed to the fact that large numbers of cattle were carried on the railway from Tcnterticld, a dis tance. of about SOU miles, and ttyat during transport, which covered two days and a half, the beasts were not supplied with drinking water. With the exception thiib the time occupied in the journey was 40 hours, the; balance of the statement is admitted by the railway authorities to be true. The depart mental statement with reference to the carriage of enti le ia that the greater proportion is con veyed over...
