Twojbuahrangers, who are known, stack up a party near Gulong Beef on Monday, and afterwards rude into Mudgee and 'shouted ' rather extensively at a hotel there. They then went to another hotel, and a constable, who had heard of their exploit, secured their horses, but the men themselves escaped. It is to be hoped the people of the Bathnrst district may be aroused by Mr. Clements' spirit to. do something to encourage farmers to try sugar beet growing in earnest, and it is much to be desired, also, that steps in the same direction should be tuken in our locality. Would not the co-operative system, as applied to sugar beet growing, be worthy of the serious attention of farmers and of all interested in Tumut 1 The successful culture of this plant, and its conversion into sugar, is a task requiring more capital than one man might be able or willing to risk ; but the experiment might fairly be tried by a company. A few of the local magnates subscribing the necessary capital might soon sta...

TUMUT. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 11 April 1868

TUMTTT. (from oub correspondent) Apwl 8th. — On Sunday afternoon a sad accident befel William Green, a youth about 13 years of age. He had been lowered by two others down a well at McGrath's place, Bombolec, for the purpose of cleaning it out (rather strange employment certainly for the Sabbath, but, I presume, a work of necessity). Alter he reached the bottom a bucket was sent down which fell off the hook it was attached to, and Green was about to replace it when the hook penetrated the inside of his arm a little below the wrist. His companions on the top of the well, ignorant of his condition, commenced to wind up, and the result was that the hook tore through the flesh, nearly the full extent of the lad's arm, causing a frightful looking gash. A horseman at onco rode into town for Dr. Large, under whose treatment I understand the wound is favorably progressing. ' ? ; I am happy to report that the attendance at the weekly meetings of our Literary Society is greatly increasing, and...

EASTER MONDAY RECREATIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 18 April 1868

EASTER MONDAY RECREATIONS, The time honored custom that devotes this day to mirth and recreation was duly observed in Gundagai, and so many of our inhabitants were drawn from their usual haunts by the combined attractions of the Athletic Sports and the Sunday School fete, to say nothing of the races at Five-mile Creek, that the town for many hours bore the aspect of a deserted village, and silence reigned in the streets. Tiie Athletic Spouts Took place on 'the Gundagai cricket ground and were witnessed by a goodly number of spectators. The ground was in good order, and the necessary preparations having been made, no unnecessary- delay was occasioned, and the various '..prizes .were contested by willing if . not numerous competitors. SUNDAY SCHOOL FETE. [Newspaper Article] — The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser — 18 April 1868

Sunday School Fete. . . Tho fete given to the children attending St. John's Sunday School was a great success, and the manner in which the varied arrangements lor the gratification of scholars and visitors were carried out is highly creditable to the active and energetic superintendent, Mr. H. H. Smithers, and his fair assistants. The thanks of all who attended is also due to tho ladies who so bountifully contributed towards their refreshment. At about 11 o'clock the children assembled at St. John's Church, and after a preliminary prayer delivered by the Rev. H. S. Seaborn formed in procession and marched through the entire length of Sheridan street to the spot appointed for the festivities, on the North Gundagai race-course: The day was most propitious, and the array of children, neatly dressed, and evidently in high spirits, was a very pleasing spectacle. In front was borne Sergeant McCook's time honored volunteer flag — the first ever used in this colony — which was followed by a...
