HOUSE OF BEDFORD BURKE'S COMMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 14 February 1914

HOUSE OF BEDFORD BURKE'S COMMENT. The big sale of the Duke of Hert ford's property (Covcnt Garden) recalls a statement of Burke as to how the earlier Russells got their vast landed possessions. "The Duke of Bedford,'- he said, "is the leviathan of all creatures of the Crown. . . The grants to the House of Bedford were so enormous as not only to outrage economy but to stagger credulity." At one time the Duko of Bedford was set down as holding 86,421 acres in eight counties. A great deal of his property has been sold of late years. Sir John JNlacdonnell, in his work on the land question, has somo severo strictures concerning the Duke of Bed ford's gates, now, of course, done away with, "which are closed at early, odd, and inconvenient hours, and which in dicate the seigneurial rights to treat some of the populous districts of Lon don as if they were private gardens." The motto of the Russells is the fatalist one, "Che sara, sara"—What will be, will be. PRESENT DUKE. The Duke of Bedfor...

PATHOS OF LAST TURN WILL POWER TRIUMPHS. [Newspaper Article] — Korong Vale Lance and North West Advertiser — 14 February 1914

PATHOS OF LAST TURN WILL POWER TRIUMPHS. Jn the old days at tho Pavilion Mr .Mark Melford, the brother of Austen Melford, often appeared in his sketch "Non-Suited," and at his farewell mati nee at the Xilttle Theatre yesterday he once more took the part of Mr Stur geon, K.C. (says the "Daily News" No vember 28). The veteran actor is very ill indeed, and it was only by strength of will that he was able to take his last turn. There was still the same dry humor in Sturgeon's cross-examination, and the same incisive asides. At the end of the afternoon, sur rounded by his friends and those who had taken part in the performance, Mr Mark Mclford recited his own poem on the Suffragette's hard path as pioneer. Miss Ethel Tilbury had to prompt him from the book, and It was pathetic to tee how the sick man forgot his weak ness in the pleasure of declaiming his poem. Many actors have taken fare well of the stage, but none in such touching circumstances. There could not have been a hundred peopl...
