Rich To Launch Student Weekly Amidst Council Follies Controversy By LESLIE LENKOWSKY and GORDON PRAGER WWFlM called the controversy raised by tire two installments of Council Follies a possible feud between the REPORTER and the Student Council Gordon Prager , author of the satire , stated The Council Follies was meant to serve only as a satire of an institution on this campus that at this time is very vulnerable to criticism The fact that the Follies was run where the _editonal column is usually found gave a few students the impression that a serious Paul Rich charge had been placed against Paul Rich of stuffing ballot boxes Such is not the case Rich Counters Paul Rich countered Recently on campus a number of students have approached me as to whether or not a semi-weekly publication can exist on F and M s campus . At the beginning of the school year I voted m favor of having a semi-weekly paper under the co-editorship of Dave Harrison and Dick Kneedler After a number of weeks of pra...

Work Pinch Produces "Negative Feedback " [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 5 May 1964

Work Pinch Produces Negative Feedback By BOB SIVERLING There is a great deal to be said for students working lhard and learning all they can in a tough curriculum To a point this is a necessity The body of knowledge today is larger than it ever has been , more time and more concentrated study are necessary to master an eversmallei fraction of this bodv of knowledge A college filled with this sort of learning can be an exciting place But there is a pomt beyond which one cannot tighten the curriculum There is a point at which making the requirements stricter and the courses harder results in a negative feedback This is the point at which student activities begin to decline both in number and quality because of increasing academic pressures Then , no matter how hard the curriculum , nor how challenging the courses or professors , one reaches a point where the excitement of the campus evaporates For these student services arc as essential a part of education and the establishment of an ...

Referendum Passes — Vote Turnout Light Only 46 . 59 % or 652 students voted in Wednesday s referendum on the proposed new social regulations . Of those who cast preference ballots , 599 students voted in favor of the new code while 53 were opposed . Robert Lasky _, chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee which drew up the new proposal stated , The apathy on this campus amazes me . Students were given an opportunity to vote upon an issue of vital concern to their campus social activities ; yet , less than half of the student body found the time required to check the bottom of the ballot . I can only conclude that the students are satisfied with the _nrcsent social regulations .

REPORTER Has Poor Taste To the Editors : I feel that the COLLEGE REPORTER uses very poor taste when it continually satirizes the activities of Student Council To be sure one must realize that the COLLEGE REPORTER has the right to express its editorial opinion However , I believe the REPORTER should use a little more discretion m the future Student Council has an important function on this campus Certainly , its power is limited to a degree , but it can and dees accomplish much for the student body For example , the last meeting of Council did the following _, approved the Ad Hoc Committee s proposed social regulations , recommended an extension of Library , Bcok Shop , and Campus Hou : e hours , approved the constitution of IAESTE and the French Club , and made various recommendations to improve campus grounds . I think this represents responsible action on Council s part As a representative of Council , I take pride in . Council s activities and would like to believe that all stude...

KDITOKIALS [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 8 May 1964

KDITOKIALS Orientation and the College Although comprehensive and final examinations are only two days away , and September seems to be a word denoting some fardistant time in the future , we think it only fitting to comment at this time about the revamped freshman orientation program which will go into effect this fall . In past years entering freshmen donned dinks , muddily tugged _ctf war , grossed their way through talent shows , slept their way through school-spirited meetings and lectures , and frittered away the rest of the time breaking their new fellow-classmates limbs in knock-em-sock-em touch football and softball games . This fall s program should change all that . . The old orientation system was an anacronism , a remnant ot past decades when young men had the choice of attending college to get an education and rise above their parents social status or of spending four care-free years away from home waving college pennants and engaging in the hoopla that was known as co...

Tom Parker _^ _xs _^ _jb&uw _^^ - I Will Reluctant Dragor Emerge from Vietnam ! [Newspaper Article] — F&M College Reporter — 8 May 1964

Tom Parker _^ _xs _^ _jb&uw _^^ - I Will Reluctant Dragor Emerge from Vietnam ! Each time one says he is not a candidate he receives more votes . While Goldwater can claim the largest number of pledged electors and a possibility of winning on the first ballot in the convention , he does not have the popular support that seems necessary to go with it The Massachusetts primary and the Pennsylvania pnmary have shown surprising support for Lodge Like the primary in New Hampshire , Lodge won in Massachusetts by a landslide of write-in votes In Pennsylvania Lodge made serious inroads in Scranton territory . It appears that perhaps Governor iScranton has said once too often that he is not interested in the job Scranton polled 58 % of the vote while Lodge , who did no campaigning , nor did his supporters , gained a noted 21 % .. Since 1964 is an election year , the search begins for a suitable candidate for the Presidency Everyone who says he is runninghas a following and so do ...
