Thc Making of Reid ' s Yellow Dent Corn [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 November 1913

Thc Making of Reid s Yellow Dent Corn BY OLIVE G . REID Corn is corn , we once heard men say , but that was when agriculture was just beginning to develop on a scientific basis , before corn growing among practical farmers had become the fine art that it is today . But there were pioneers in those days who took the best they could find , planted it on Illinois blackest untried soil and spared no labor in their efforts to improve the quality of the seed as well as obtain a large yield of corn . Foremost among these pioneers was Robert Reid , who , in 1846 , came with his family to Delavan Prairie , 111 ., and started to raise corn . The first corn planted was a small yellow variety , a portion of the kernel below the cap showing a somewhat reddish tinge . It was known in the Red Oak Settlement ONE THOUSAND BUSHELS OF REIDS YELLOW DENT from which it came as Gordon Hopkins corn . With the development of the variety the reddish color has almost disappeared . Robert Reid planted his seed...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 November 1913

Comfort for the Herd With the coming- of the rougher weather more care and attention must be given the dairy cattle if the most efficient results are to be secured . Besides the manual labor of milking and feeding , the good dairyman should see that the needs of his cattle are supplied . Their surroundings should be such as to provide comfort and food in plenty . Dairy feeds are becoming more and more expensive and to secure the most efficient service dairymen are obliged to study more carefully the ins and outs of the business , and are learning at last while cows may be machines they are . living animals as well . As such they are creatures of environment as well and subject to different laws of living which , whether we wish to or not , we are compelled to recognize . Practical dairymen do not keep cows for their beauty , though it may well be , for we admire them for that . Neither do we maintain them for the mere sake of their society , which in its way is pleasant and profitab...

IVBiS'lM ^ [Newspaper Article] — Better Farming — 1 November 1913

IVBiSlM ^ Pig Eating Habit in Sows It is a well known fact that the pig eating propensity is an attribute of the old sow . It is a characteristic that has never been laid at the door of a young mother . If not old , it is the mature bred sow , she with the second or third litter , and it will be found that she is usually of the slow , sluggish disposition . An argument is put forth that this is the failing of the feeding of the hog alone . Under natural conditions the mother will sacrifice her own life for that of the young but the reverse has never been heard of . Why , then , with this fact should we be led to believe that we feed our hogs too much . If the hog has more animal food than protein why cultivate BOYS . WHAT WILL THEY WEIGH ? a taste . Which sow is it that needs the most protein ? Is it the gilt that must grow her own frame and her litter or is it the matured sow that has only her litter ? It is a known fact that on stock farms where fifty or more brood sows are kept t...
