The Annual Beport or the H . A V .. R . K . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 15 January 1870

The Annual Beport or the H . A V .. R . K . The report of the Treasurer of cur little branch railroad , which we published on Wednesday makes a very flattering exhibit . From the first year in which the road was started when but one train was run per day , and the earnings were but about § 1 , 000 , down to the present time when we have four daily trains each way , and the earnings are $ t < J , fi : ! u , G 0 . The business of tiie rpad has steadily uud regularly increased during each sneccssiye year . The earnings of the last three years have been ns follows : 1867 , $ 10 , 618 , 94 1868 , $ 11 , 472 , 21 1869 , $ 13 , 586 , 60 Of the increased earnings of the past year , thirteen hundred dollars must be credited to the increase of passengers consequent upon running four trains a day . The wisdom of that policy , although it seemed doubtful at the time , lias boon fully justified by events . Every passenger train on the Northwestern road now is met by a train upon our o...

Trichina Spiralis Benacdy . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 15 January 1870

Trichina Spiralis Benacdy . To the Editor of the Chicago Tribune : It is reported that trichina is again in our midst , arising from eating diseased pork . The afflicted ask for a curative agent . A series of experiments have enabled me to offer a remedy for trichina spiralis . Give the patient two drops of carbolic acid ( crystals ) thoroughly incorporated with forty drops of glycerine , Alternate with forty drops of liquor sodas bisulphis , to be administered in a wine glass of water . In urgent cases repeat these agents every hour , and continue nutil relief is obtained . I find that carbolic acid and sulphurous acid will effectually destroy the animulcults and parasitic family . These anti-parastic agents may be safely administered in a diluted form as tbove subscribed , and injurious results can not possibly occur to the most delicate constitution . The trichina may be found throughout the system , mid in order to reach them with carbolic acid , I advise Its admixture with glyc...

DeKalb County Senooia . SUPKKINTKSDKNT S REPORT . MAVFEI . W . —District No . 2 ; Miss Parker , teacher ; pupils , t ! irty-flve . That combination of circumstances that makes a good School , I did not find at my morning visit—The teacher seemed to be working against almost overpowering influences . During the noon recess , I learned that a new scries of readers had been put into the School that morning , that some disaffection had arisen in consequence , and furthermore that some language of an exciting nature , had been used at the School-house , before the pupils . My impressions of the forenoon were somewhat modified by my afternoon s visit , yet a lack of system and of thorough instruction is mauifest . That Miss Parker desires to teach efficiently , I donbt not ; but she , and others who expect to rise abovo ~ mcdiocritv , must hold - a close rein , and think much of the best modes of teaching and governing . Dear Sir—The Convention lias been in a - tual sesfiou now something over two weeks , and h . if accomplished but little as yet , but are now getting settled down to business , The organization wtis regarded here as a democratic victory achieved through the defection of a few members whose antecedents had been Republicans but who were eleot & d in opposition to regular Republican nominations , and who hold the balance of po , \ veV in tho Convention . LIFE IN A RUSSIAN LOG HUT . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 15 January 1870

LIFE IN A RUSSIAN LOG HUT . Tne Muscovite Peasantry and Tbelr Homes . A writer in Chambers Journal says : In spite of railways and telegraphs , of foieign travel and foreign literature the national life of Rossia—that quaint , striking , grotesque , indescribable life of which the passing tonrist sees so little—is as yet but slightly altered and within hearing of the railway whistle many a rite is still celebrated which was practiced in Russia while the wild grass of the steppe . grew high over the cradle of Moscow , and the still unconverted Prince Vladimir was hanging his shield of defiance at the gates of Constantinople . My landlord occupies a log hut so near my own , that as he leans out of his side window I can almost shake hands with him from my own doorway ; hit garrison , consisting of his wife , sister and mother-in-law , for children he has none He id a carpenter by trade , but doubtless owes as much or * hs worldly wealth to the sleek , comfortable looking poultry that c...
