TIIIXGS TTORTn KSOIYIXK. UgiFCE Hints. Put a few live fish Into well, if angle worms infest them. Toads are capital helpers in taking care of Tine patched. f2eW milch cows should be carded dai ly. They like it, and it pays. Rich milk is not the best for calves. A butter cow is not a good stock c ow. Insects do not infest very late sown peas aa tbej do early ones. Stewed pumpkin as a poultice has been found of great value in reducing inflam matory rheumatism I be potato is a great absorber of pot- j ash. Therefore wood ashes are a good j manure for it j Experiments seem to prove that fence j posts set up the reverse way from which j they grow, will last much the longer Calcined plaster is as good a fertilizer as the uncalcined, but it is usually wasted after its use in the arts. Some one says if salt is kept before a horse in the stable, he will not gnaw his manger. Trial will tell. Root crops, not grain, are the things for young orchards. Cam&ria Freeman. - . THURSDAY, : : r-JUNE 10, 1869. The Rfed Handkerchief. In a late nntnber of the New York Trib une Horace Greeley gives the following ac count of the novel way in which his political friends passed or defeated certain laws which were pending beforo the Radical legislature of the State: "A red handkerchief denoted the manner in which the members were to rote. Whtuever the Clerk bad read the title of a bill, in which there waa a 'bone,' the leader, if he considered his 'Ring' satisfied, would march to the front of the Cleik's desk and gracefully blow his nose with his red linen. Every member of the ' Ring' would vote in favor of the measure . If, on the contrary, the leader should careless ly hold the handkerchief toward the floor, that denoted that his followers should vote against the measure. Many a project was carried or defeated by that red handkerchief, and it was as much a terror to the applicart for legisla tive favors as were some of the 'Executive Comm...

A SISTER OFCIIARITY. A strange and unusual spectacle was ptesented to the passers-by in London on the 10th of April. It was a funeral no uncommon eight in thi3 teeming city ! Yet thia one was exceptional. A white hearso with white plumes. Carriages full of persons with white capa or white veils. Caba crammed with people, and following the mournful proceepion, for many a weary ruile, a large but orderly crowd of men and worcen, their faces set in sorrowful efforts to keep down the rising sob, but steadily runrcbing on under the burning sun of that truly summer's day, untill the gates of the Kensal Green Cemetery were reached. And then the procession of white veiled woniea formed in twos and twos, and the wail of both men and women burst forth uncontrollably until the officiating clergy themselves LroLe down, and for u time nothing was heard but groans and 6obs and tears. "And who was this i"' asked Protestant friend, "Whose death Las caused such n sensation in this busy, money-loving...
