PUBLIC LEDGER. Office, No. 18 Madlaon Hlre-wi LARGEST CITl CIRCULATION BY TELEGRAPH. MIDNIGHT DISPATCHES From Portland, Me. Portlakd, July 3. There wag a terri ble conflagration here yesterday. The wind was blowing t gale at the time of the fire. It commenced on Commercial tlreet, and swept over a space of a mile and a half in length, by a quarter of a mile in width, destroying everything in its track. Half of the city is destroyed, including all the business portion, ex cepting the heaviest business houses. Several churches, all newspapers offices, banks, public buildings, and many pri vate dwellings were destroyed.' Fifty houses wpre blown up in endeavoring to check its rirotiress. The customhouse (lire proof) esenped. The loss is fnorro ous, arid at . present not estimated. A " thousand tents have been sent to the housf-less pdnple. The destruction is so complete, the people can hardly tell where there houses were. The details of the great fire show a terrible disaster. All newsp...
