From a boy's composition on hens : "I cut my Uncle "William's hen's head off with a hatcber, and it scared her to death." In Cincinnati, almost every portion of the hog is put to some valuable use. A distinguished philosopher of that city is now trying some method of turning the sequel to some account. (S) Jrsr' -m .-mn&rvX?-' ' to Sailg Qslzxinn. ASTORIA. OREGON: D. C. IRELAND Editor. THURSDAY. Nov. 15, 1877 Reception to Colonel Miller. A large number of the leading citi zens of Astoria last evening tendered Col. M. F. Miller, of the 4th artil lery, a reception at the Occident hotel m this city, as an evidence of appre ciation of his services as an officer in the campaign against the Indian Jo seph, and the hostile savages in Idaho and Montana, and as a testimonial of the respect in which Col. Miller is held by his fellow citizens of Clatsop county. It is not often that people assemble on occasions of this kind with more sincerity than the people of Astoria were assembled last evening. It is very rare that the recipient of such evidences of public appreciation are more deserving. But few men in the army of the United States have earned a more meritorious record than Col. L P. Miller. The lot of a soldier, bearing arms in the defense of his country is at best a severe one, but...

The Oregonian has taken up the cudgel in defense of the fraudulent Northern Pacific railroad terminus at Tacoma, and seems to take particular delight in battering the head of Seat tle, because the Dispatch, in defense of its home interests, saw fit to op pose an attempted fraud in the pro posed "renewal of the grant" to the Northern Pacific railroad company. "It so happens that the JXorth Pacific railroad terminates at Tacoma, not at Seattle," says 'the Oregonian, with the advice volunteered that "the mistake need not now be discussed." We are of the same opinion as the Dispatch, that "the mistake" should be discus sed, and we believe that the resolution recently introduced in the senate ask- ing for information and particulars . was proper, and right. The Oregonian may be relating a fact when it says that it "knows noth...
