Bismarck,* D. T., Feb. 28, 1878. THE COLONEL'S UETTER. Very Interesting "Washington Gossip. Kditorial Correipon dence. WASHINGTON, D. C., Feb. 20, 187S.— Since ray last, the^senate committeeJhas agreed to report a bill for the organ izu Tion of the new Territory of Lincoln, and it is generally believed the bill will pass both branches of Congress. Certainly the measure has many strong friends in both houses, numbering in the House sev eral leading Democrats. Still it is a measure that may be blocked at any stage by slight opposition for there is a feeling that the people can get along for a year •or two with their present government, «md a disposition to withhold patronage as much as possible from the President. The bill granting lands rfor the con struction of a railroad from Bismarck to the Black Hills, of course, cannot pass, but Judge Kidder will introduce a bill incorporating the company and granting the right of way, and.as I stated in my Ja&t, money to build it is ready...

Bismarck, D. T.» March 2, 1878 TIm*«wT«r*lt«ry- The Yankton Pro* is "mad" over the territorial division upon the one hundreth meridian. Even the people are indignant to a limited extent The Press says "Bismarck is an ambitious burg and is very anxious to become the capital of something. It is altogether probable that the people of that town are giving their influence in favor of this new measure in the hope of being designated the capital of the new Terntoiy." The Press also prints this cheerful par agraph "A gentleman who is in a posi tion to know says that President Hajes will probably tavor the bill tor thejdi vis ion of Dakota on the one hundreth men di'an." The Press makes a column report of a meeting of citizens who seem to dislike Colonel Lounsbervy's scheme. W can' publish the whole report but we will give what General Beadle had to say "General Beadle said that the difficulties surrounding Dakota were not within Da kota's control They were outside of us and were powerfu...

At 2S he was admitted to the bar He was not long in getting a reputation. It was in him and out it must come. He was elected State Senator and Judge ot his District. In 1851 he was elected U. S. Bismarck,! D. *t.» March 7, 1878 Tk« Wiwnabont* of Old Bull* A late number of the Fort Benton Rec ord has a general review of the situation, under the head of "Sitting Bull." In popular estimation that name has been big enough to cover the whole Indian nation, hostile and friendly, but in 4act ot large enough to command the esteem of his own tribe. The Record say* «The truth of the matter is simply this: Sitting Bull re not, perhaps never has been, the he*o chief of the Sioux. Pre vious to the Custer massacre we were in formed, and reported the fact at the time, that Sitting Bull was a subordinate chief, •of little influence and small command. We have since learned from good author ity that this overrated chieftan was not present at the Cu6ter massacre, and took no part in it, and that the whipping his people afterwards received from General Miles ^discouraged him- from ever again tak'ng up arms against the Amencan sol diers. In a lite interview with Majo WaMi these facts were f...

fljcftstnarcltSrUHiiie. Bismarck,ED. T.f March 94 1878 It appears from General JSrisbin's "anecdote*" of Ben Wade that the dis tinguished senator just dead was the au thor of a certain famous expiession so of ten attributed to Bill Tweed Wade and Douglass had many a tilt, Douglass the assaulting party until Wade concluded he would act upon the offensive and "go for" the "Little Giant" Soon afterward, the Little Giant was bewailing the fate of the nation, and picturing the sad con dition we would be in if .the Free-Soil ers succeeded, having worked himself up into a passion. When he was at the highest pitch, Mr. Wade rose in his seat, and said, with indescribable coolness: •'Well, what are you going to do about it?" Douglass for a moment was sur prised aud dumbfounded, and then at tempted to proceed but the pith was knocked out of his argument, and the senators all smiled at his earnestness. Douglass sat down in disgust. Mr. Dou glas afterwards said, "That interroga tory of W...
